The CogStack team is encouraged to see clear and achievable recommendations in the Sudlow Review, published today, which asserts that in many areas the UK is a global leader in the transformational use of health data for public benefit. Yet our complex and inefficient data systems make it difficult and slow to conduct research which can bring greater benefits to patients. “We are letting patients and their families down and no change is not an option.” Referencing CogStack’s ability to extract structured information from unstructured clinical text, the report recommends: “...that DHSC should invest in the efficiency gains of deploying tools to securely access and extract structured information from unstructured medical free text across all primary and secondary care EPR systems.” We look forward to contributing to this national effort and helping to realise the vision of a more connected, data-driven healthcare landscape for the benefit of all UK citizens. Feels like a busy couple of weeks with Chris Tomlinson, MD (awesome presenter) and Simon Ellershaw presenting updates on the progress of Foresight, our national scale #FoundationModel of Electronic Health Records, at various events with our fantastic partners and enablers at NHS England, NHS Transformation Directorate, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Databricks, Health Data Research UK (HDR UK), British Heart Foundation and CogStack Great to see people immediately seeing the potential of such a foundational model trained on a population of 57M individuals and 13B medical events for many NHS organisational, population health and patient-level applications. Now work is beginning on evaluation and great to have Alex Handy on board for that.
