  • The sudden, unexpected death of an infant is an extremely tragic and traumatic experience for any family. It also has a significant impact on those who respond and investigate. After the number of sudden, unexpected infant deaths doubled in Merseyside between 2019 and 2022, Merseyside Police worked closely with Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust to adopt a joint agency problem-solving approach to prevent this. Recognising that families were unknowingly putting their infants at risk with unsafe sleeping practices, they developed the Safer Sleep initiative which aims to: 🔹 raise the public’s awareness of safer sleep practices 🔹 improve partnership working with the NHS 🔹 supporting families and building trust in communities Read more about the initiative: https://lnkd.in/eN6XQxsS

  • 💙 Thank you to every police officer, member of staff and volunteer for all they’ve done to fight crime and keep the public safe throughout the year, as policing has continued to face evolving, complex challenges. 🎄 While many people enjoy time with their loved ones this Christmas, we think of those who continue to work during the festive period, often sacrificing precious time with their loved ones. As we look forward to 2025, we wish them a very happy Christmas and we hope they find time to rest and spend time with their friends and family over the coming days.

  • We recently delivered a two-week ‘train the trainer’ pilot with Northumbria Police, designed to prepare trainers to roll out the updated public and personal safety training (PPST) curriculum. The programme benefited from the expertise of Professor Chris Cushion from Loughborough University, whose knowledge of adult learning and coaching shaped the scenario-based training (SBT) programme by combining both practical application and theory. A long-time collaborator with Professor Cushion, Gerard O’Dea from Dynamis Training shared valuable insights from his experience delivering similar training internationally, ensuring the approach was informed by best practices across related industries. Take a look at the Authorised Professional Practice (APP) for PPST here: https://lnkd.in/dua8u2Ge

  • We’ve updated our authorised professional practice (APP) for vetting, bringing in changes to improve consistency and to make sure the highest standards are maintained across all police forces in England and Wales. The refreshed APP is built around the modern vetting cycle, aligning with the National Decision Model (NDM) and the new #CodeofEthics, introducing: 🔹 clearer processes and guidance for vetting teams 🔹 stronger support for decision-making in line with national standards 🔹 a national standard for vetting those working with vulnerable individuals 🔹 an updated annual integrity and vetting review process to ensure regular re-vetting 🔹 a digital-first, standardised national vetting application form These updates reinforce the importance of vetting as a shared responsibility across policing, with leaders and supervisors playing a key role in maintaining the highest standards. • Amy Duckworth, a British Transport Police (BTP) PCSO at London Bridge Station shares how a proactive approach and community collaboration helped address rough sleeping and anti-social behaviour (ASB) in the area. When faced with safety concerns, drug misuse, and increasing ASB around the station, Amy developed a plan involving joint patrols with local council wardens, charities, and Metropolitan Police officers. Through empathy, consistent engagement, and referrals to housing and substance misuse services, many individuals received the support they needed. Results after 12 months: ✅ 82% reduction in rough sleeping and ASB near London Bridge ✅ 14 civil banning orders and 9 community protection notices issued for persistent ASB cases ✅ Enhanced safety and strengthened partnerships between BTP and station staff Read further: https://lnkd.in/eSySw9fy

  • We’ve developed new principles to support police forces across England and Wales to consistently implement the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme (DVDS). Research has highlighted inconsistencies in how the scheme is applied across England and Wales, affecting victims’ or potential victims access to crucial information about a partner’s history. These updated principles, created in collaboration with the National Police Chiefs' Council aim to standardise processes, giving victims and potential victims the same standard of support and protection wherever they are in the country. Find out more about the updated principles: https://lnkd.in/eJUKccz4

    • "This is about protecting victims and potential victims. Incidents of domestic abuse are too high, and we need to work together to share information with victims whenever we can. The DVDS is an important tool to help achieve this and we need to make sure it is used consistently across all forces." - ACC Tom Harding, Director of Operational Standards, College of Policing
