  • Last week, we were at the #UN Forum on Minorities with the Sasakawa Peace Foundation / 公益財団法人 笹川平和財団 drawing attention to the link between contemporary conflicts and self-determination claims which often involve minority and indigenous groups seeking respect for their identity and rights.   In an intervention, John Packer our special advisor on the Mediating Self-determination Conflicts partnership, highlighted the need for policymakers and practitioners to acknowledge and engage with the underlying self-determination dynamics of these conflicts and find ways to address them – preferably before disputes erupt into violence. • Since June 2024, Conciliation Resources has been working with state and civil society partners in the Central African Republic (CAR) to implement a project aiming to integrate mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) into gender-sensitive peacebuilding programming. This month, experts and practitioners in MHPSS, #peacebuilding & gender gathered in CAR to develop a toolkit for training practitioners on how to integrate an MHPSS-sensitive approach to community engagement. The toolkit will support the work of practitioners in CAR to help people access mental health services and support referral systems. It aims to increase collaboration between different actors on MHPSS, and recognises the role of religious leaders and traditional healers in encouraging people to seek help. • Many of the world’s conflicts have disputes over self-determination (SD) at their core. Conciliation Resources is engaged in a learning partnership with the Sasakawa Peace Foundation / 公益財団法人 笹川平和財団 to develop our understanding and practice of peace and mediation processes in contexts where self-determination is an issue.
