We did it! Our initial target was 1000T of carbon savings; we have now saved almost double the amount of CO2e. 👏 This equals driving around the world about 200 times! Congratulations, and thank you to all the sites involved in helping us achieve this incredible goal. #sustainablecatering #coolfoodpro PECT Soil Association Université de Bretagne Occidentale La Bio en Finistère Labocéa Interreg VA France (Channel) England Investors in the Environment (iiE) Food for Life (FFL) Audrey Fontaine Camille T. Global temperatures this year almost guaranteed to be 1.55 degrees warmer than pre-industrial levels. This is already beyond the threshold of the Paris Agreement, signed by over 200 countries in 2015. It can be hard not to feel hopeless, but there are still lots of ways we can all help fight climate change! Cool Food Pro is a great, free carbon calculator to help you feel motivated and fend off climate anxiety. By making small changes to your purchasing and meals, you can cumulatively make a big impact to your carbon footprint. For example, by replacing a third of the beef used in an average bolognaise with meat replacements like lentils, you can save 216kg of CO2e per 200-person service – that’s the equivalent of driving almost 1000km! All these changes really add up, particularly over time and if you’re a caterer with multiple sites. So if you’re feeling overwhelmed by climate change at the moment, don’t despair! 🌍✨We’re just back from a fascinating and inspiring 2 days at the Association for Science and Discovery Centres conference where we mixed with inspirational people from #science and discovery centres across the UK atThe Royal Society in London, focussing on how to Shape the future of Science Together. Cool Food Pro represented the Soil Association by chairing a discussion on #sustainable #catering, hearing from fellow Bristolians We The Curious, Scottish Seabird Centre Birmingham Museums Trust and Eureka! about the steps they are taking to serve sustainable food to their visitors. From sourcing locally-grown ingredients to reducing meat on the menus, there was a real desire to reshape their food offer in a way that's better for the environment and communities, and work through the barriers they can sometimes face. A huge thank you to the organisers, speakers, and everyone who we spoke to exchange ideas 🌱 We are looking forward to working through insights from the session, and continuing our discussions on sustainable catering! #Sustainability #ScienceConference #SustainableCatering #Networking #FoodForThePlanet #ASDC24

The Cool Food Pro team have had a great few days up in Scotland, having lots of great discussions about sustainability in higher education and spreading the word about our calculator! First up, we went to the first ever University of Glasgow Food Festival. We had some really exciting conversations with students and staff about the amazing work they’re doing, and how we can help them track, quantify and demonstrate their targets using Cool Food Pro! It’s fantastic to see such engaged and enthusiastic young people – the Eco-Hub is a great space helping reduce waste. Next, we went to the EAUC conference at The University of Edinburgh. It was wonderful to meet so many like-minded people trying to find ways to make higher education more sustainable. There were some great discussions, including a workshop on the future of food run by our colleagues in Soil Association Scotland, and we made some brilliant contacts. Collaboration is the key to making the sector more sustainable, and we can’t wait to deepen these connections! Finally, we attended the Green Gown Awards at Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh! There were so many great people and projects being rightfully rewarded for their fantastic work. Congratulations to all the winners, and we’re really excited to see what amazing projects everyone’s been working on next year! Thanks so much to everyone who’s spoken to us the last few days, it’s been great getting out and spreading the word about how university caterers can make a huge difference with just a few changes. If you’re working towards a Food for Life (FFL) Served Here award, Cool Food Pro is a great tool to help track and evidence your progress! Using its powerful reporting capabilities, you can demonstrate both exactly how you’re changing the produce you buy, and what the environmental savings are! This is particularly true for buying locally and seasonally, two of Cool Food Pro’s key areas. For example, by buying squash locally, instead of importing it from Europe, you could save 140kg of CO2e per tonne, the equivalent of driving 643km by car! Your exact savings are broken down in detail on the ‘My Progress’ page. You can also download evidence of your savings, both as spreadsheets in the calculator, and on custom posters from the Cool Food Pro portal! So if you’re heading for an award, but need some support both reaching and demonstrating your targets, sign up today at coolfoodpro.net! #catering #sustainablecatering #netzero #environmental #goodfood #seasonalfood #localfood

Have you got any leftover pumpkins from Halloween? More than 8 million pumpkins – 18000 tonnes of edible flesh – are typically binned after Halloween. But don’t throw them away, turn them into this delicious pumpkin soup from our sister project Cool Food! By using your spooky decorations, you can reduce your food waste and carbon impact, while enjoying a delicious seasonal meal. Pumpkins, like all gourds, are at their best this time of year, which is why we use them for Halloween. But this also means they’re at their tastiest! This is just one of the wealth of great hints and tips to support you reducing your emissions available in our Good Practice Library, so why not sign up today at coolfoodpro.net! https://lnkd.in/eYs9Shww 📸 photo by Nick Hewing at Unsplash #halloween #sustainablecatering #pumpkins #greentransformation #seasonalfood #foodwaste

Today we’d like to talk about how Cool Food Pro has developed over the years! The project was originally funded by Interreg Europe, a European Union scheme to fund international collaboration across both sides of the English Channel. We worked with three French partners – Labocéa, #Mab29 and Université de Bretagne Occidentale – along with PECT in the UK to create the tool. Together, we’ve managed to save over 8000 tons of CO2e, and almost one and a half billion litres of water! It's been great to see our initial partners continue to use Cool Food Pro. In France #MAB29 are working in #Brest to support hospitals and care homes to access more organic produce, using the Cool Food Pro carbon calculator to show the positive impact on the climate. Labocéa have worked with over 50 schools and care homes to help them reduce their food waste, evidencing the climate impact with results from the Cool Food Pro app. They’ve also worked with music festivals and a large cleaning company to minimise their impact on the environment. PECT's focus is on health and wellbeing across #peterborough and they recently used Cool Food Pro’s educational resources to support people’s understanding of the link between #foodandclimate. At Soil Association we’ve been lucky enough to receive funding from our climate partner Deloitte Sustainability to make Cool Food Pro even better! They’ve enabled us to recruit a new team member, and develop some great new food waste resources. We’ve taken these to schools across the country for our food waste workshops, and they’ve had a great response from children and staff alike! Most excitingly, this funding is enabling us to redevelop the calculator, adding a wealth of new functionality next year including baselining and menu analysis. This will make it an even more powerful and useful tool to help you meet your climate targets, but there’s still so much you can do with Cool Food Pro to reduce your carbon footprint, so sign up today at https://lnkd.in/dNgzdEaJ! #sustainablecatering #netzero #greentransformation #europeanunion #internationalresearch #lowcarbon #catering #sustainability #sustainablefood

This week we’re asking: why should you choose Cool Food Pro over the other carbon calculators for caterers out there? Yesterday we discussed how important it is to have a free tool to help you meet your carbon targets. Today we’d like to talk about the wealth of educational resources available through Cool Food Pro to support you reducing your emissions! The calculator contains the Good Practices Library, which has loads of great tips, links and resources. For example, by redistributing your surplus cooked waste to a community fridge or organisation you can massively reduce the carbon impact of your waste, and support those in need in your community. There are links to several organisations and directories in the Library to help you do this. The Cool Food Pro portal has many detailed resources as well as downloadable personalised posters showing your exact emissions. These resources include our food waste materials, which give you everything you need to carry out a food waste audit, alongside background information, statistics and support for using the calculator to reduce your waste. Lastly, we organise free in-person workshops for Cool Food Pro users! Our workshops are informative, enjoyable and a fantastic opportunity to connect with the wider community and learn important concepts around food waste, encouraging attendees to make positive changes which are vital for our climate 🌦️ nature 🕊️🐝and our planet! So sign up to Cool Food Pro for free today at https://lnkd.in/dNgzdEaJ and access the wealth of free resources to help you meet your climate targets! 📸 Photo by Engin Akyurt on Unsplash
