About us

Crisis Action is an award winning NGO that works behind the scenes to forge global coalitions among organisations and individuals to engage governments to prevent armed conflicts and uphold their obligations to protect civilians. (For more detail on our campaigns, from Syria to South Sudan, please see our website.) Our innovative model of conflict prevention has been recognised by the 2012 MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions and the 2013 Skoll Foundation Award for Social Entrepreneurship. In 2013, the Ford Foundation also named Crisis Action as one of 7 NGOs to reshape the global human rights movement. Crisis Action has previously worked on Myanmar in 2007, on the military crackdown on peaceful protests, and in 2009, on the continued detention of Aung San Suu Kyi.

Chief Executive Officer at Crisis Action

“I can’t believe it. For the first time in 14 years I cried for hours I am afraid to go to sleep for fear that I wake up and it is a dream. All of my friends are out! All of them are free…some of them have been in prison for 46 years! We are not in a democracy yet, the fight is not over yet but Syria is free from Assad. This is the happiest day of my life!” It’s been a hard year for civilians in conflict and those of us that work to protect them. So the relief expressed by @Crisis Action’s Syrian partners – captured here by our partner Ahmad Helmi, the founder of @Ta’afi that supports victims of enforced disappearance in Syria – has been a source of deep joy. Once again, I’ve felt grateful to do what I do because of the inspirational activists we work with here Crisis Action, in many instances, over many years. Our journey with our Syrian partners is more than a decade long - dating back to the earliest days when the Syrian government's violent response to a peaceful uprising turned into a bloody and brutal civil war. Standing with them, we helped spur a ground-breaking commitment from the UN Security Council to authorise humanitarian aid across the borders from Syria’s neighbours, and the creation of a landmark institution to support the thousands of families trapped in the agony of uncertainty about the plight of their loved ones that were detained by the regime.    Our journey with Palestinian and Israelis seeking peace, justice, and security has also been a long one, dating back to Crisis Action’s earliest days. In Lebanon, as we have convened partners and supported our own Crisis Action team members whose homes and families have been under Israeli fire, we’ve been reminded of our engagement in 2006 when we worked to secure support for the ceasefire deal of that year. Now, we are once again standing alongside courageous Sudanese, who are enduring the world’s worst humanitarian catastrophe and trying to spur sufficient political will to pressure warring parties and those that back them to halt their war crimes and the devastation of lives and futures. For every member of the Crisis Action team, it is this privilege, of standing alongside these brave and the determined activists, which sustains us. This renews our determination to confront those that want to silence civil society and crush dissent. This is what us makes us determined to work for a world where no one loses their lives or loved ones to war. And it’s the belief that an alternative future is possible in Syria, Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, the Sahel, and Sudan. At the turn of a year, our work has never felt more urgent and necessary. And I've never felt more grateful for the example and collaboration of our partners and allies.

  • ANNOUNCEMENT: New Board Co-Chairs for Crisis Action  We are excited to announce that Crisis Action now has two new co-chairs for its board of directors: Regan Ralph and Preethi Herman [She/ Her]. Two trailblazers in their own right, they succeed another trailblazer, Anna Neistat, who has now stepped down from the board following seven years of sterling service on the Board, four of them as board chair.  Our first female chair, Anya brought the depth of her experience as a leader of the global human rights movement, with leadership positions at both Amnesty and Human Rights Watch and now as head of the Docket at the Clooney Foundation for Justice, where she’s leading groundbreaking developments in international justice. The Board and team are so grateful to Anya for her winning combination of intellect, commitment, collegiality, courage and sheer inspiration. We will miss her but continue to collaborate with her and wish her the very best.  We are fortunate that we will bear the loss of Anya with the gain of our two new co-chairs. Regan Ralph, founder and former CEO of the Fund for Global Human Rights, is another doyenne of the international human rights movement. In her twenty years at the Fund, Regan was responsible for channelling more than $110m to over 800 frontline activists, groups, and movements around the world. Prior to that, Regan was Vice President for Health and Reproductive Rights at the National Women’s Law Center in Washington D.C and from 1992-2001, Regan helped build and ultimately directed the Women’s Rights division of Human Rights Watch. Regan is a graduate of Harvard University and Yale Law School and studied international law at the London School of Economics and Arabic at the American University in Cairo.  Preethi Herman is the CEO and Co-Founder of Nguvu Collective, a social impact enterprise that helps emerging women changemakers to become strong social change leaders and drive positive impact at scale in Africa and Asia. Preethi has spent the last two decades working with marginalised communities across the world and supporting their efforts in citizen-led social change. Prior to setting up Nguvu Collective, she was the head of the Change.org Foundation where she led a team engaging over 100 million people in citizen-led campaigns across Asia, Europe and Latin America. She also set up Change.org as the people's platform for driving impact in India. Preethi is an inaugural Obama Fellow and Skoll Senior Fellow with a never dying enthusiasm and passion for women’s leadership, helping startups, technology for social change, and citizen led social impact around the world. The Board and Crisis Action team are thrilled to have Regan and Preethi bringing their wisdom and experience as leaders and activists to guide and support Crisis Action in this exciting new chapter.
