About us
Crisis is the national charity for people experiencing homelessness. We are committed to ending homelessness. Every day we see the devastating impact homelessness has on people’s lives. Every year we work side by side with thousands of homeless people, to help them rebuild their lives and leave homelessness behind for good. Through our pioneering research into the causes and consequences of homelessness and the solutions to it, we know what it will take to end it. Together with others who share our resolve, we bring our knowledge, experience and determination to campaign for the changes that will solve the homelessness crisis once and for all. We bring together a unique volunteer effort each Christmas, to bring warmth, companionship and vital services to people at one of the hardest times of the year, and offer a starting point out of homelessness. We know that homelessness is not inevitable. We know that together we can end it.

📣 We've an unusual appeal from the warehouse crew! They need some very special transport. Ahead of Christmas, suppliers donating food deliver it to our warehouse. It's stored safely there until we're ready to deliver it to the hotels over Christmas and in January. HOWEVER, fresh food such as meat, dairy and fish needs to be kept refrigerated and that means transporting it in fridge vans. That's where you lot come in. OK, we know that most people won't have one of these stashed outside. But we figure that eventually this post will be read by someone at a company that has a couple of 3.5 ton fridge vans they can lend us over Christmas or one they can spare until January 21st. If you think you can help, please get in touch with our transport team - cclogistics@crisis.org.uk . They will be both grateful and relieved to hear from you. And if you can't help, thanks for reading this far and please spread the word - share this post. Someone will be able to help and together we will find them!

We're often approached by people who want to donate useful gifts such as warm clothing, food or snacks for our Christmas guests. Gifts have ranged from a warm scarf to a ton of veg! We're touched by the thoughtfulness of all these offers but, to save everyone guessing what might help, our centres draw up lists of items that they need. For some centres it's easiest to just create a wish list on Amazon so supporters can order them online and they can be delivered in one go. Others will be open for in-person deliveries. For example, our warehouse in Canning Town will be open for donations 2 – 8 December, from 10am – 4pm. Find out more about how you can donate gifts in kind: https://lnkd.in/eJTTvTp4 and we'll be adding in information for each area as it becomes available Update - Newcastle's list is here: https://lnkd.in/grAqcNNA

5 ways to get involved in Crisis Icebreaker - cold water challenge🌊❄️ Cold water dips are well known for being great for well-being - they can boost your immune system, reduce stress and even improve your mood. But this winter - with your help they will help to end homelessness too! Icebreaker, our cold water challenge, returns this year and you can get involved at one of our in person events or you can do it your own way and create your own challenge. We've put together some ideas about how you can make a splash this winter: 🏊Wild swimming - sign up with a friend and challenge yourself to a swim or dip in a lake, river or in the sea! Bonus points for a christmas day or new year's day dip 👙A dip a day in an ice bath or paddling pool - that paddling pool isn't just for summer! Dig it out and fill it with water and take a dip outside every day. 🚿Daily cold shower - follow in the footsteps of Wim Hof and introduce cold water showers to your daily routine 💦Ice bucket challenge - revive this old favourite - all you need is a bucket! The person who donates the most can even have the pleasure of tipping it over your head themselves! 👯Take part in one of our events - join us and others like you at one of our in person events near you. Our first one is at Brockwell Lido on Saturday 7 December and we'd love for you to join us! No matter what the challenge, every penny you raise will help someone build a life beyond homelessness. When Charlotte’s mum passed away, Charlotte and her daughter were forced to move out of their shared home as the landlord was selling up. A broken phone meant Charlotte missed a call from the council and lost the chance of a flat. Her appeal was denied, and she turned to Crisis. “When I had to leave, I went into temporary accommodation. My daughter was moving with me from place to place. From the first time entering Crisis, I felt at ease. There was no judging. I felt that they understood I just needed some help.” We were able to help Charlotte secure somewhere new to live, so that Charlotte and her daughter finally had a place to call home. “They helped me with the paperwork and helped me to get out of that situation. They supported me with a deposit for my new home, and it just took a weight off my shoulders. My home is finally home.” But the story doesn’t stop there. Charlotte’s Crisis Lead Worker also helped her apply for and secure a Crisis Changing Lives grant, which allowed her to fulfil her dream of setting up a vegan catering company. Charlotte even returned to Crisis at Christmas last year to prepare food for our Christmas guests. Charlotte’s is just one amazing story of how life-changing your support can be this Christmas.
