📢 On the Back of Success: A Deeper Dive into Business Administration at the GLA Festival of Learning- Theme one. Following the incredible success last week of the Greater London Authority Festival of Learning, we are excited to highlight one of the key themes covered during the event—Business Administration. This topic was brought to life through dynamic sessions led by three exceptional trainers: Tom Bryant, Zoe Collier MA(Cantab), and Professor Stan Gilmour KPM. Their collective expertise provided participants with invaluable insights. Mastering Policy-Making with Zoe Collier was a compelling session on the art and science of policy-making. Participants explored the foundations of excellent policy, which merges politics, evidence, and practical delivery. Zoe introduced a clear framework for planning, designing, and implementing policy while addressing "wicked problems" through collaborative strategies. Key takeaways included methods for stakeholder engagement, influence mapping, and crafting impactful briefings for decision-makers. With practical examples and actionable advice, Zoe empowered participants to navigate the complexities of the policy cycle and make meaningful contributions to shaping effective policies in the real world. Transforming Outcomes with Systems Thinking – Professor Stan Gilmour's session was on applying systems thinking to address complex challenges like inequality in London. Highlighting real-world case studies, including Operation Paramount, he demonstrated how collaboration, data-driven approaches, and early intervention can break intergenerational cycles of adversity. Participants learned to map systems, identify leverage points, and co-design impactful solutions with communities. Professor Gilmour emphasized the importance of systems leadership traits such as resilience, inclusivity, and adaptability, encouraging participants to focus on driving meaningful systems change through partnerships and shared goals Exploring AI for Enhanced Productivity with Tom Bryant focused on leveraging AI to streamline tasks and enhance productivity. He emphasized how AI tools like Microsoft Copilot, Excel’s AI features, and Teams meeting summaries can simplify everyday work—freeing up time for creativity and innovation. Tom highlighted the importance of adopting a growth mindset, experimenting with AI solutions, and enhancing emotional intelligence (EQ) to remain effective in an AI-driven world. With actionable tips like starting with small use cases and cultivating curiosity, participants left empowered to explore AI as a tool for efficiency and transformation. The feedback from attendees has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants praising the depth of content, interactive discussions, and real-world applications shared during the sessions. Finding My Tribe: The Power of Belonging Last week, I attended a conference organised by the Civil Service College to present two taster workshops to Greater London Authority members on systems thinking and leadership, and the usual anxieties were swirling: Would I know anyone? Would the sessions be relevant? Would I just end up awkwardly hovering by the coffee machine in the breaks, scrolling through my phone? But then I met Evelyn Forde MBE. What followed was a whirlwind conversation; she was witty, insightful, and genuinely interested in what I had to say. She shared her own experiences with such warmth and an obvious knack for storytelling, weaving tales of her professional journey with humour and honesty. She spoke about the challenges she faced, the lessons she learned, and the moments of doubt she overcame. And through it all, she emphasised the importance of finding your tribe – the people who support you, champion you, and make you feel like you belong. That conversation was a turning point. Suddenly, the conference felt less intimidating and more like the opportunity it was. I felt empowered to engage with others, to share my own stories, and to seek out those connections that would make me feel truly part of something. Evelyn’s words resonated deeply. In a world that often feels isolating and competitive, the need to belong is fundamental. It's about finding your people, your community, the place where you can be your authentic self without fear of judgment.
