📢 On the Back of Success: A Deeper Dive into Business Administration at the GLA Festival of Learning- Theme one. Following the incredible success last week of the Greater London Authority Festival of Learning, we are excited to highlight one of the key themes covered during the event—Business Administration. This topic was brought to life through dynamic sessions led by three exceptional trainers: Tom Bryant, Zoe Collier MA(Cantab), and Professor Stan Gilmour KPM. Their collective expertise provided participants with invaluable insights. Mastering Policy-Making with Zoe Collier was a compelling session on the art and science of policy-making. Participants explored the foundations of excellent policy, which merges politics, evidence, and practical delivery. Zoe introduced a clear framework for planning, designing, and implementing policy while addressing "wicked problems" through collaborative strategies. Key takeaways included methods for stakeholder engagement, influence mapping, and crafting impactful briefings for decision-makers. With practical examples and actionable advice, Zoe empowered participants to navigate the complexities of the policy cycle and make meaningful contributions to shaping effective policies in the real world. Transforming Outcomes with Systems Thinking – Professor Stan Gilmour's session was on applying systems thinking to address complex challenges like inequality in London. Highlighting real-world case studies, including Operation Paramount, he demonstrated how collaboration, data-driven approaches, and early intervention can break intergenerational cycles of adversity. Participants learned to map systems, identify leverage points, and co-design impactful solutions with communities. Professor Gilmour emphasized the importance of systems leadership traits such as resilience, inclusivity, and adaptability, encouraging participants to focus on driving meaningful systems change through partnerships and shared goals Exploring AI for Enhanced Productivity with Tom Bryant focused on leveraging AI to streamline tasks and enhance productivity. He emphasized how AI tools like Microsoft Copilot, Excel’s AI features, and Teams meeting summaries can simplify everyday work—freeing up time for creativity and innovation. Tom highlighted the importance of adopting a growth mindset, experimenting with AI solutions, and enhancing emotional intelligence (EQ) to remain effective in an AI-driven world. With actionable tips like starting with small use cases and cultivating curiosity, participants left empowered to explore AI as a tool for efficiency and transformation. The feedback from attendees has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants praising the depth of content, interactive discussions, and real-world applications shared during the sessions. Stay tuned for more updates into additional themes from this impactful day, #FestivalOfLearning #BusinessAdministration #EmpoweringTeams #ContinuousDevelopment

Finding My Tribe: The Power of Belonging Last week, I attended a conference organised by the Civil Service College to present two taster workshops to Greater London Authority members on systems thinking and leadership, and the usual anxieties were swirling: Would I know anyone? Would the sessions be relevant? Would I just end up awkwardly hovering by the coffee machine in the breaks, scrolling through my phone? But then I met Evelyn Forde MBE. What followed was a whirlwind conversation; she was witty, insightful, and genuinely interested in what I had to say. She shared her own experiences with such warmth and an obvious knack for storytelling, weaving tales of her professional journey with humour and honesty. She spoke about the challenges she faced, the lessons she learned, and the moments of doubt she overcame. And through it all, she emphasised the importance of finding your tribe – the people who support you, champion you, and make you feel like you belong. That conversation was a turning point. Suddenly, the conference felt less intimidating and more like the opportunity it was. I felt empowered to engage with others, to share my own stories, and to seek out those connections that would make me feel truly part of something. Evelyn’s words resonated deeply. In a world that often feels isolating and competitive, the need to belong is fundamental. It's about finding your people, your community, the place where you can be your authentic self without fear of judgment. Here are a few takeaways from my encounter with Evelyn: - Be open to connection: Sometimes, all it takes is a smile and an open mind to spark a meaningful conversation. - Embrace vulnerability: Sharing your experiences, even the challenging ones, can foster deep connections. - Seek out your tribe: Find the people who lift you up and inspire you to be your best self. - Be the person who creates belonging: Just like Evelyn did for me, be the one who welcomes others and makes them feel seen and heard. Belonging is not a luxury; it's a necessity. It fuels our well-being, our creativity, and our success. And sometimes, all it takes is a chance encounter with someone like Evelyn Forde MBE to remind us of its power.

Arriving at City Hall yesterday to open a 'Festival of Learning Day', I was reminded of London's landscape and modes of transport! Amongst other things, I spoke about the power of connections and relationships and struck up a conversation with Professor Stan Gilmour KPM who has done and continues to do some great work with young people (and adults) in the Violence Reduction Unit. Massive thank you to Ayodeji Akande for inviting me. I met Ayo many years ago and that power of connection and relationships meant we were able to pick up where we left off. It was a great morning, well done Civil Service College for supporting the Greater London Authority (GLA) event.

Communications Strategist & Former Chief Special Adviser | Expert in Political Campaigns & Speechwriting | Campaign Director, Sadiq Khan for London 2024 | UN Consultant
It has been quite the year. The first few months were dominated by managing Sadiq Khan’s campaign for re-election as Mayor of London, working with friends old and new at The Labour Party. It was an honour and a thrill (really - not just LinkedIn talk) to help road test the new Labour brand and machine which went on to dominate the General Election. 🌹 That was an election I missed, as I hopped straight back into work with my much loved UN-OHRLLS family, as they battled to put the needs of Small Island Developing States front and centre of global affairs. 🏝️ International development was never far from front of mind as I continued my speechwriting partnership with Sanitation and Water for All - a UNICEF-hosted global partnership. I wish all roads did lead to Rome, but I was glad to find one, where I worked with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). And not forgetting the brilliant folks at IRCWASH. 🌍 Throughout the year, I never lost sight of the work closest to my heart - supporting the two Welsh children’s hospices. Tŷ Hafan & Hope House and Tŷ Gobaith. An anxious wait ahead now, as the promised sustainable funding review reaches its conclusion. 💚 As ever, huge thanks to the folks at the Civil Service College who facilitated my training far and wide, and make life so easy for us trainers to rock up and do our thing. 👨🏻💻 Finally, as the year turned towards autumn I took up the speechwriting cudgels at CDP, working with their brilliant CEO Sherry Madera. Having dipped our toes into the ocean of rhetorical adventure this year, I feel that next year we’ll be sailing the high seas. 🚢 There are so many other brilliant people and organisations I’ve been lucky enough to work with this year. But, I’m afraid you’ll all have to take a back seat to the arrival of my daughter Nola in July as the true highlight of 2024. As I said… quite the year. 😊

Effective communication is at the heart of impactful leadership, and Alan Barker delivered an exceptional “Writing for Ministers” session to the UK Collaborative on Development Research UKCDR Through a structured, insightful approach, Alan addressed every question raised by the delegates, ensuring their specific challenges and nuances were fully explored. His practical techniques for planning, drafting, and editing resonated deeply, leaving participants feeling empowered to craft concise, impactful, and actionable communications. What stood out was Alan’s ability to bridge theory with real-world application, helping leaders refine their skills to deliver messages that influence decisions and drive action. The workshop not only clarified the principles of writing with precision and purpose but also reinforced the value of aligning communication with the needs of its audience. The session left such a lasting impression on its participants—offering tools that go beyond the workshop to shape daily practices. #Leadership #EffectiveCommunication #ProfessionalDevelopment
