Communications Strategist & Former Chief Special Adviser | Expert in Political Campaigns & Speechwriting | Campaign Director, Sadiq Khan for London 2024 | UN Consultant
It has been quite the year. The first few months were dominated by managing Sadiq Khan’s campaign for re-election as Mayor of London, working with friends old and new at The Labour Party. It was an honour and a thrill (really - not just LinkedIn talk) to help road test the new Labour brand and machine which went on to dominate the General Election. 🌹 That was an election I missed, as I hopped straight back into work with my much loved UN-OHRLLS family, as they battled to put the needs of Small Island Developing States front and centre of global affairs. 🏝️ International development was never far from front of mind as I continued my speechwriting partnership with Sanitation and Water for All - a UNICEF-hosted global partnership. I wish all roads did lead to Rome, but I was glad to find one, where I worked with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). And not forgetting the brilliant folks at IRCWASH. 🌍 Throughout the year, I never lost sight of the work closest to my heart - supporting the two Welsh children’s hospices. Tŷ Hafan & Hope House and Tŷ Gobaith. An anxious wait ahead now, as the promised sustainable funding review reaches its conclusion. 💚 As ever, huge thanks to the folks at the Civil Service College who facilitated my training far and wide, and make life so easy for us trainers to rock up and do our thing. 👨🏻💻 Finally, as the year turned towards autumn I took up the speechwriting cudgels at CDP, working with their brilliant CEO Sherry Madera. Having dipped our toes into the ocean of rhetorical adventure this year, I feel that next year we’ll be sailing the high seas. 🚢 There are so many other brilliant people and organisations I’ve been lucky enough to work with this year. But, I’m afraid you’ll all have to take a back seat to the arrival of my daughter Nola in July as the true highlight of 2024. As I said… quite the year. 😊

The Agile Manager 🏃♂️ : What Kind of Manager are you? Delegates from Ghana and Uganda joined Ralph Naylor for a week-long programme on Agile Management to unpack their own styles of leadership, develop powerful communication strategies and effectively deal with change. During one exercise, participants place themselves on a quadrant, from “leader” to “manager” on one axis and “people-oriented” to “task-oriented” on the other. The aim is to encourage flexibility in the way organisations view leadership and management, recognising that there are many leadership styles and that certain roles may require very different skillsets. By thinking critically about the nuances of leadership, we can understand our own strengths and weaknesses, getting a clearer understanding of the role and the skills needed to succeed! With thanks to Ralph Naylor and Maria Older BA for this week. #AgileManagement #LeadershipDevelopment #ManagementStyles #LeadershipSkills #AgileLeadership #ChangeManagement

This week Thomas Foster delivered an insightful workshop on Overcoming Impostor Syndrome. This course delved into the feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt that many experience, particularly when struggling to accept praise or downplay achievements. Thomas explained how Impostor Syndrome can make people feel like we don’t deserve our position or responsibilities, and how it can hinder our professional growth. He shared staggering statistics, including that even the likes of Meryl Streep, Albert Einstein, and Maya Angelou battled with it. This highlighted how common the syndrome is, affecting individuals at all levels in the workplace. What really stood out was the practical advice provided: from recognising and embracing our strengths to developing strategies for building confidence. Delegates were encouraged to reflect on their skillsets and given tools to tackle the negative thoughts that undermine their success. This workshop is a must for anyone struggling with self-doubt in their career. By the end, participants walked away with clear action plans, support strategies, and more clarity about our own potential. Thank you, Thomas, for an empowering and motivating session! #ImposterSyndrome #Confidence #Leadership #PersonalDevelopment
