Join the #DAReNationalHub team at Newcastle University as a Research Assistant/Associate Weather Generator 📣 We are seeking a researcher to work on the development of a weather generator to downscale climate projections over the UK and Ireland in a role co-funded by the Co-Centre for Climate + Biodiversity + Water. The researcher will help deliver climate information needed for important case studies within the DARe Hub, working with other postdoctoral researchers and stakeholders from industry to help develop long-term strategies for resilient and low-carbon transport infrastructure within the UK. I am thrilled to be presenting at the Transportation Research Board 2025 Annual Meeting in Washington on some of key outputs from DARe National Hub about enhancing transport performance through risk-informed asset management. Ahead of this premier gathering of transportation professionals and researchers, I have been reflecting on some areas that I am keen on exploring at #TRBAM and are likely to drive transformative change in transportation research and practice: 1️⃣ Resilience and Adaptation – As our infrastructure faces increasing threats from climate change and other disruptions, it’s critical to explore strategies that enhance preparedness and recovery while minimising environmental impact. How infrastructure, services, and users interact during disruptions and how recovery can be equitable and sustainable? 2️⃣ Sustainability and Decarbonisation – Transitioning to net-zero transportation systems isn’t just about adopting clean energy; it’s about rethinking how we move people and goods while addressing Scope 3 emissions, promoting active mobility and embedding sustainable asset management practices. 3️⃣ Equity and Accessibility – Transportation must work for everyone. From systemic inequities to the digital divide, these challenges require innovative solutions that ensure inclusivity. 4️⃣ Technological Innovation – From autonomous vehicles to AI-driven decision support systems, technology continues to reshape mobility. But how do we ensure these advancements are value for money? Great couple of days in #Edinburgh on a joint DARe National Hub - TransiT Digital Twinning for Transport Decarbonisation - ENSIGN event looking at the #electrification of #freight. Lots of great discussions from too many people to be able to name here. A few words encapsulating the emerging thinking (not the only ones though!): -Uncertainty -costs -regulatory framework and incentives -urgency -joint transport-energy spatial planning The three #Hubs will be looking and progressing the discussion through our own work programmes as well as via collaborative efforts. We have just had two thoroughly interesting days at a co-creation workshop hosted by three key EPSRC UK funded project hubs DARe National Hub, TransiT Digital Twinning for Transport Decarbonisation and ENSIGN. The workshop, entitled Achieving Resilient Freight Electromobility across Road and Rail, focused on the electrification of freight transport. It highlighted the key role and importance to the UK economy of the freight sector, the challenges of transitioning to electric systems, and the need for resilient infrastructure. Discussions explored climate impacts, operational resilience for energy and logistics, and the role of recovery services. The second day delved into the costs of transitioning, exploring themes such as financial burdens, emerging business models, modal shifts, government roles, and infrastructure investment. Collaboration, future-proofing, and balancing affordability with innovation emerged as critical for achieving sustainable and resilient freight systems. This week, the DARe Hub hosted our first North East England Transport Summit. Hosted at Newcastle University, the event brought together industry, civic authority, and operational partners from across the region to explore and discuss the key transport challenges we're facing. A day packed full of important knowledge sharing, there was a real sense of collaboration for action amongst delegates. "The North East is uniquely positioned to lead in the transport transformation with a rich history of innovation and a strong industrial base. By levering our strengths and working together, we can create a model for more sustainable transport that could be replicated and used across the UK." "The key aspect that keeps coming up today is that we need to understand how we are all joined up and connected. We need more collaboration like this across multiple agencies and multiple sectors - then we'll be able to understand the wider picture." "We need more evidence, data, and collaboration not only between disciplines, but between sectors, and DARe is going to help facilitate that." "This isn't the end of the process - this is the start of a set of dialogues and collective action to move this forward."
