The UK's leading professional producing and learning theatre in Derby.

About us

Derby Theatre has a long and rich history of delivering high quality drama to audiences. Previously Derby Playhouse, Derby Theatre, which sits at the heart of the city, is now owned and run by the University of Derby. The Theatre is rooted in the local community but international in its outlook. We produce and present high quality performances working with the best local, regional and national talent. In 2012, the theatre was awarded strategic funding by Arts Council England to develop a new model for regional theatre in the 21st Century. From 2013, under the new artistic directorship of Sarah Brigham, who works alongside General Manager, Gary Johnson, we are transforming from a traditional producing house to an organisation of training, mentorship and artistic excellence; we will be an exemplar, a new way of looking at the role and responsibility of theatre to its community. Our focus will ensure that each part of our process will be open to public learning opportunities. It will build the organisation's ability to take artistic risks by bringing creatives and audiences along on a creative path via the co-production of narratives.

Updates

  • We were delighted to attend the East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire) Derbyshire Business Awards on Friday as Derby Theatre were finalists in two categories; Community Impact for our collaborative and creative work with underrepresented groups in Derby, and Education and Business Partnership with St Ralph Sherwin Catholic Multi Academy Trust for Speak Out, a project that improves oracy in schools. Although we didn't take the awards home this time we were proud to be shortlisted and had a brilliant night catching up with friends, connections and some of our supporters. Huge congratulations to all of the finalists and winners!

  • A BIG THANK YOU! We're back from the seaside and delighted to share that the generous support of our #Welfare audiences has raised £2404.50. These vital funds will be split with our fundraising partners Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre and will help both charities to offer brilliant experiences for disadvantaged young people from Derby whether that’s tickets to the theatre, or a much-needed holiday in Skegness!

  • Can you donate to help a young person enjoy a trip to the seaside...or to the theatre? Our wonderful partnership with Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre is allowing both charities to raise vital funds that support work with disadvantaged young people from Derby, offering them brilliant experiences that make a real difference! Thanks to the generous audiences attending Welfare at Derby Theatre we've raised over £1200 towards our fundraising target but we've still got a way to go before the show finishes on Saturday. We know that everyone is facing challenges, but if you can, please dig deep and make a donation - just £10 could pay for a theatre ticket or holiday activities for a young person. Pop into the theatre or donate online here: https://lnkd.in/dixUTmJ3 There is also still time to secure your seats, so don't miss out on the chance to experience Welfare at Derby Theatre - brass, bingo and a bucket load of memories await!

  • It's press and guest night for Welfare at Derby Theatre, a new play written by Derbyshire playwright Abi Zakarian, telling the story of The Derbyshire Miners’ Holiday Camp in Skegness. Audiences can expect brass bands, rousing speeches, entertainment and a whole load of bingo!      We're delighted to be working in partnership during Welfare with Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre joining forces to raise vital funds that will help both charities to offer brilliant experiences to disadvantaged young people from Derby - whether that is a visit to the theatre for the very first time or a much-needed holiday in Skegness. Derby Theatre engages with over 5000 young people each year through innovative programmes for young people offering bursary places to attend Youth Theatre, creative mentoring sessions for care experienced young people that help to develop confidence and tickets to see exciting productions at the theatre.    Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre, another Skegness institution was founded in 1891 and provides a 5-day holiday for over 400 children each year at their dedicated centre in Skegness.  Young people can have a break in a safe and welcoming space, take part in activities with new friends and most importantly, enjoy an ice cream on the beach! We will be collecting donations at every performance of Welfare, which runs at Derby Theatre until 12 October.   Everything we raise will be split equally between both charities and every penny donated will help us to make a massive difference for young people in our city. You can also donate online, so please do support if you can (Link in the comments)

Another milestone for Positive Social, thanks to Derby Theatre and Cosy Direct.

View profile for Mark Saxby, graphic

Social media consultant, trainer & speaker at Status Social. Passionate co-founder of the Positive Social charity and creator of Be More Colin.

I don't like giving up my Sundays for work but.... wow! What a day! Sarah Brigham and her wonderful team at Derby Theatre allowed us to produce our first Positive Social film there. It's difficult for schools to allow us to video so we recruited members of the Youth Theatre and turned their rehearsal room into a classroom. Sarah Cogdon captured the action, including the young people making fantastic commitments to change their behaviour on social media. Special thanks go to Vitalis Waweru for hosting us and being so enthusiastic and Harry Kingscott for organising it all. And a big thanks to Peter Ellse and Cosy Direct for funding the video production, which will be used to train new deliverers and show teachers what we're all about. And all of yesterday's efforts will go towards us helping thousands of young people take back control of their lives from social media!
