The UK's leading professional producing and learning theatre in Derby.

About us

Derby Theatre has a long and rich history of delivering high quality drama to audiences. Previously Derby Playhouse, Derby Theatre, which sits at the heart of the city, is now owned and run by the University of Derby. The Theatre is rooted in the local community but international in its outlook. We produce and present high quality performances working with the best local, regional and national talent. In 2012, the theatre was awarded strategic funding by Arts Council England to develop a new model for regional theatre in the 21st Century. From 2013, under the new artistic directorship of Sarah Brigham, who works alongside General Manager, Gary Johnson, we are transforming from a traditional producing house to an organisation of training, mentorship and artistic excellence; we will be an exemplar, a new way of looking at the role and responsibility of theatre to its community. Our focus will ensure that each part of our process will be open to public learning opportunities. It will build the organisation's ability to take artistic risks by bringing creatives and audiences along on a creative path via the co-production of narratives.

  • Merry Christmas from all of us at #DerbyTheatre! We want to take a moment to thank you—our wonderful audience, supporters, and community—for making 2024 truly magical. Whether you joined us for a show, participated in our workshops, or simply shared a smile with us, you’ve been at the heart of everything we do. Here’s to a joyful Christmas filled with love and laughter. We can’t wait to welcome you back for more amazing stories and theatre in 2025! ♥

  • Acts of Kindness We're in full festive flow at Derby Theatre with our Christmas shows , A Christmas Carol and Chicken Licken entertaining people of all ages; bringing a festive cheer and a lot of goodwill. At Derby Theatre we believe that everyone should have the chance to experience the magic of theatre, so throughout the season we have been asking our amazing audiences to help us by donating to Acts of Kindness, a new pay it forward ticket programme that will allow us to share creative experiences with the people who need it most.  Donating just £10 will go towards the cost of a ticket to be gifted to anyone who might not otherwise be able to attend a show at the theatre because of financial barriers.  This includes support for people from local community groups we work with; care-experienced young people, adults living with dementia, and people seeking sanctuary.   Thanks to our generous audiences, we have already raised over £10,000 and every donation will make a real difference. If you are able, then please consider donating online https://lnkd.in/eyDDAJWM and you will be helping us to share Acts of Kindness all through the year.   Derby Theatre is a registered charity, number 1129005.

  • We were delighted to attend the East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire) Derbyshire Business Awards on Friday as Derby Theatre were finalists in two categories; Community Impact for our collaborative and creative work with underrepresented groups in Derby, and Education and Business Partnership with St Ralph Sherwin Catholic Multi Academy Trust for Speak Out, a project that improves oracy in schools. Although we didn't take the awards home this time we were proud to be shortlisted and had a brilliant night catching up with friends, connections and some of our supporters. Huge congratulations to all of the finalists and winners!

  • It's press and guest night for Welfare at Derby Theatre, a new play written by Derbyshire playwright Abi Zakarian, telling the story of The Derbyshire Miners’ Holiday Camp in Skegness. Audiences can expect brass bands, rousing speeches, entertainment and a whole load of bingo!      We're delighted to be working in partnership during Welfare with Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre joining forces to raise vital funds that will help both charities to offer brilliant experiences to disadvantaged young people from Derby - whether that is a visit to the theatre for the very first time or a much-needed holiday in Skegness. Derby Theatre engages with over 5000 young people each year through innovative programmes for young people offering bursary places to attend Youth Theatre, creative mentoring sessions for care experienced young people that help to develop confidence and tickets to see exciting productions at the theatre.    Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre, another Skegness institution was founded in 1891 and provides a 5-day holiday for over 400 children each year at their dedicated centre in Skegness.  Young people can have a break in a safe and welcoming space, take part in activities with new friends and most importantly, enjoy an ice cream on the beach! We will be collecting donations at every performance of Welfare, which runs at Derby Theatre until 12 October.   Everything we raise will be split equally between both charities and every penny donated will help us to make a massive difference for young people in our city. You can also donate online, so please do support if you can (Link in the comments)
