Today, as part of the ongoing Campus Collective series which aims to bring people together on campus to debate and discuss common interests, a captivating talk by Dr. Jason Pandya-Wood, author of The Kindness Fix and former DMU academic and alumnus, was delivered highlighting the potential of kindness in creating lasting social change and fostering unity across divided sectors of society. In his talk, Dr. Wood explored how social policy interventions can be more effective, accepted, and just when designed with compassion. He emphasised that a more compassionate approach to welfare, politics, and social systems has the power to bridge divisions and repair our struggling welfare systems. He said: “Rather than just doing a simple book launch, I want to engage with as many students and academics in the areas of social policy, social work, health, criminology, sociology, politics and other allied subjects.” A truly insightful session for all those passionate about improving social systems through empathy and care. #CampusCollective #KindnessFix #SocialPolicy #SocialChange

Empowering students and staff to achieve the sustainable development goals | The global hub for SDG16
About us
De Montfort University is the only higher education institution in Britain to be a global hub for a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). Simply SDG 16 is to promote peace, justice and strong institutions, but within that overall goal is a series of aims and targets established by the United Nations and endorsed by all member states. The roots of De Montfort University becoming the global hub for Sustainable Development Goal 16 were planted back in the summer of 2017. Senior officials at DMU, which had a track record of outreach work with refugees, were involved in talks with the United Nations about how the university could help with the issue of forced migration. At the time, the conflict in Syria was seeing thousands of migrants every day fleeing their homeland with many heading to Europe, which caused some countries to close their borders. Impressed with DMU’s work to date, officials at the UN’s Department of Public Information (UN-DPI) offered the university the chance to become the world lead for higher education institutions on the JoinTogether project, which aims to highlight the issue of forced migration. Later in that summer of 2018, the Director of the UN-DPI’s Outreach Division, Maher Nasser, made the announcement that DMU was to become the global hub for Sustainable Development Goal 16 to promote peace, justice and strong institutions.

The recent COP29 on DMU campus event proved to be a remarkable success! ✨ It brought together staff and students to take direct action on climate and put forward ideas to improve sustainability at the university. Over the course of two weeks the COP on campus schedule featured a wide range of activities, including talks and engaging panel discussions. These sessions aimed to inspire and educate everyone about important environmental issues that affect us all. 🌎 The events also served as a platform for staff and students to present their research and projects, showcasing innovative ideas aimed at tackling climate issues. The networking opportunities allowed participants to connect with one another and local organisations. 🌐 To celebrate the hard work of those at DMU, the prestigious Climate Awards were held during the closing of the COP29 events. This ceremony celebrated individuals for their dedicated efforts in sustainability at DMU. Overall, COP29 engaged the DMU community in important conversations about climate change, raised awareness, and encouraged everyone to act toward a more sustainable future. 💫 The networking opportunities allowed participants to connect with one another and with local organisations, fostering collaborations that could lead to powerful initiatives in the future. 💚 Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to the success of COP29! 💚

Yesterday two De Montfort University students attended the BISA Climate Negotiation Simulation 2024. The event was hosted by the Royal Institute of International affairs at Chatham House in collaboration with BISA. Students from across the UK came together at Chatham house to represent different countries and try their hand at negotiating climate resolutions. They also had the chance to hear from key note speekers including Ruth Townend and David Gunn, who are both Senior research fellow at Chatham House. Miah Ileye and Yandeh Sanyang were our student team and they did an excellent job representing the university and the SDG hub in their roles.

Our very own Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research and Business Innovation Professor Mike Kagioglou FHEA, Cmgr FCMI, FRS NSW, FRICS, FCIOB, represented De Montfort University at COP29 Azerbaijan🌎. Check out his posts to learn more about what took place during COP29 at Azerbaijan 🌐
Starting the day with the ‘resume high level session’, with the President of Palau making the statesmen that climate change impacts have already arrived in this small island as well as other similar countries. Hard to ignore the many similar stories across so many pavilions at COP29 Azerbaijan similar stories in this session from Fiji, The Netherlands, Mali, the European Union, Samoa and a group of 39 islands, and other countries, call for a shoulder to shoulder commitment. The cost of action is nowhere near as significant when compared to the cost of the impacts of climate change to countries and communities, if nothing is done.
