DMU United Nations Impact Hub

The recent COP29 on DMU campus event proved to be a remarkable success! ✨ It brought together staff and students to take direct action on climate and put forward ideas to improve sustainability at the university. Over the course of two weeks the COP on campus schedule featured a wide range of activities, including talks and engaging panel discussions. These sessions aimed to inspire and educate everyone about important environmental issues that affect us all. 🌎 The events also served as a platform for staff and students to present their research and projects, showcasing innovative ideas aimed at tackling climate issues. The networking opportunities allowed participants to connect with one another and local organisations. 🌐 To celebrate the hard work of those at DMU, the prestigious Climate Awards were held during the closing of the COP29 events. This ceremony celebrated individuals for their dedicated efforts in sustainability at DMU. Overall, COP29 engaged the DMU community in important conversations about climate change, raised awareness, and encouraged everyone to act toward a more sustainable future. 💫 The networking opportunities allowed participants to connect with one another and with local organisations, fostering collaborations that could lead to powerful initiatives in the future. 💚 Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to the success of COP29! 💚

Yesterday two De Montfort University students attended the BISA Climate Negotiation Simulation 2024. The event was hosted by the Royal Institute of International affairs at Chatham House in collaboration with BISA. Students from across the UK came together at Chatham house to represent different countries and try their hand at negotiating climate resolutions. They also had the chance to hear from key note speekers including Ruth Townend and David Gunn, who are both Senior research fellow at Chatham House. Miah Ileye and Yandeh Sanyang were our student team and they did an excellent job representing the university and the SDG hub in their roles.

Our very own Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research and Business Innovation Professor Mike Kagioglou FHEA, Cmgr FCMI, FRS NSW, FRICS, FCIOB, represented De Montfort University at COP29 Azerbaijan🌎. Check out his posts to learn more about what took place during COP29 at Azerbaijan 🌐

To conclude the campus activities for COP29 at De Montfort University, the DMU United Nations Impact Hub hosted the Climate Awards to celebrate staff and students that have done outstanding work towards sustainable action at DMU. Dr. Mark Charlton hosted the event, handing out the certificates and awards to all of the winners. Awards were handed out for categories such as Energy Champion, Climate Action Hero and Climate Justice Champion. This year additional certificates were given out to those who were highly commended! Congratulations to everyone that recieved an award and thank you to everyone that attended!

To coincide with COP29, People Planet Pint was hosted yesterday by DMU United Nations Impact Hub. It consisted of a panel and exhibition that discussed sustainability and architecture.
