Last week ‘Black Whirl: A Warning to a Polluted World’, the installation by acclaimed Azerbaijani artist Faig Ahmed, commissioned by us and Clean Air Fund, went live 💚 Standing at 7.6m, this striking carpet features traditional Azerbaijani miniatures that represent the urgency of combating air pollution, particularly black carbon emissions, which are responsible for over eight million deaths a year - more than smoking. Mum, I've finally made it! Yes, that's me at Oxford addressing the Advertising Society with a talk about social purpose in advertising and (to coin a phrase) how not to be evil. My talk to the talented, inquisitive and committed students (who were all born in concerningly recent years like 2005) described our continuing commitment to purpose and impact. Trends in advertising change with increasing rapidity as evidenced by the bloated, gouty, syphilitic personification of the industry: the Cannes Lions. Like a Dad at a disco the advertising world desperately chases trends. Remember when everything was about BLM, then it was MeToo, suddenly the Metaverse was vital to every brand as was social purpose? Now AI has swept away all other considerations and influences, including purpose and impact. However for us, particularly given Trump's victory, social purpose and impact are as vital as ever. Because progressive consumer sentiment and the actions of businesses and civil society are vital global counter weights to authoritarianism. That is the comms industry has a vital role to play in promoting positivity, representation and fairness and It was heartening to hear that the next generation of the industry believes this too.
