Lucas joined DWP Digital as part of a T-Level placement in collaboration with Blackpool and The Fylde College. He first heard of our work placement programme from his college tutor, and has since been successful in securing apprenticeships in Project Management. "During my placement I have worked across three different areas of the business. This has allowed me to gain insight of the different roles within DWP Digital. This has supported me in building varied experience whilst upskilling in different areas, but the best part is the number of internal stakeholders I network with gaining invaluable knowledge. "Everyone I speak to provides amazing advice and support with my work, if I ever feel stuck and with mentoring and coaching. My line manager and head of role both keep me well informed of all the training and courses that are available and are very accommodating with time to build my skills and CV. "As I continue the Social Mobility Apprenticeship programme, I am very excited for the next step in my career. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to rotate between three teams which is a great way to understand a particular job role you may want to progress in.  "To anyone considering an apprenticeship with DWP Digital, I say do it! You get the best of both worlds, your learning costs are covered, so you can earn while you learn lifelong skills. It’s a great way to start, change or level up your career, as degrees and courses can be expensive and time consuming. I personally feel T-Levels and apprenticeships are a great way to get a head start on your career compared to other alternatives." • After initially embarking on a career in finance, Dipa joined DWP Digital on a level 4 DevOps Engineering apprenticeship. "The best thing about my apprenticeship is that I can learn new skills that can be applied directly to my job. Thanks to the training on offer and the support provided through my apprenticeship I have acquired the skill of the programming language Python and my problem-solving skills have significantly improved. "From the moment I started my apprenticeship, every course or workshop I have done, I have learnt something new. "I enjoyed a two day 'Hack Yourself First' workshop and a Professional Scrum Master 1 workshop after completing a 16-week boot camp. I found the Hack training very useful as it focused on online safety and security and how to be vigilant in protecting yourself from scammers or hackers. "The PSM1 training was also useful as I got to learn about scrum culture. I found it helpful as my team uses scrum and agile methodologies. We are now moving to using Kanban software and I have noticed workshops that will help me learn more about that. "We are always encouraged to attend any relevant conferences or workshops that would be useful to us as a team or as an individual." • Monday 10 February marks the start of National Apprenticeship Week. Over the next few days we're going to be sharing stories from our amazing apprentices like Lewis, who joined a social mobility apprenticeship scheme after completing a T-Level placement. "When I first received the options of T-Level work placements, DWP Digital had the best skills offer alongside the experience I would gain. The placement was also relevant to the skills I was developing on my course projects and for future opportunities such as an apprenticeship. "The placement provided a great insight into the world of software engineering. I had my first good look of how the industry worked such as agile working methods and gained a wealth of knowledge of the different tools and software used. I worked on a project to create an app for a zoo that would allow customers to book tickets, view animal information and an interactive quiz to engage children whilst at the zoo. This involved planning, researching, programming using Java, reviewing our code and our project which taught me the value of feedback. "While being on the T-Level did offer a large amount of knowledge, it’s very different than being an apprentice. As a T-Level student, I worked in the office 2 days a week and the other 3 days I studied in college, now as an apprentice I work 3 days remotely at home and 2 days in the office. Initially, the change felt daunting as the responsibility felt greater, but I soon realised the learning and development opportunities on offer, so I’m excited to see where this leads me. "I began my apprenticeship in a 16-week bootcamp which covered a multitude of aspects of coding. I started from the very basics of programming to a team project creating a hotel booking website. This project was to test our skills and get used to working collaboratively. "We then started our specialism track where I did 4 weeks of Java. Each project became more challenging and self-guided as time went on and we gained confidence. "Now that I have completed bootcamp I am most looking forward to joining a team, working on my portfolio of evidence and work on real projects and products that will further my knowledge, deepen my skills and most importantly, benefit other people." Last night I had the honour of attending a reception for UK Civil Servants with The King (… I know - the actual King! ) Myself and the other DWP Award finalists and winners were invited down to Buckingham Palace to represent Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) for this once in a lifetime experience ! It was brilliant to meet up with other colleagues across the department as well as representing DWP Digital with Cameron Bowley to share this unique moment ✨👑🇬🇧

  • "I work with product managers and development teams to bring our vision for our products to life. "I bring the team together across the country to work with other teams and achieve our product goals. We’re developing cross-cutting services to work with our different benefit systems. That means working with operations and people in digital who work on different products and services. Each day we get to work with someone new. "Key skills for product managers include understanding the problems that we need to solve, how we can best deliver value, what work needs to be prioritised, and making sure the teams are achieving the right outcomes. "There’s also a need for good communication. You are the voice of the product, so it’s important to bring people on the journey with you and help them understand the vision for the product."
