E3G’s founding directors have a unique experience working on energy, environment, security policy and diplomacy challenges in the UK Foreign Ministry, Prime Minister's Strategy Unit and as senior political advisors. E3G was founded in 2004 to address the challenge of how to deliver transformational policy change. Our experience has been that the main obstacles to sustainable development lie not in a lack of analysis or available resources, but in the silo-based nature of institutions and decision-makers. We, therefore, work to align politics and policy to leverage strategic outcomes. E3G is established in the UK as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. E3G maintains full independence in all its activities and is funded by a mix of foundations, government bodies and NGOs. E3G is established in Belgium as a not-for-profit association (ASBL) and in Washington as a private company with 501c3 tax exempt status.

To compete for green investment, the UK must accelerate its #TransitionPlan agenda. Transition plans are critical to scaling investment and ensuring economy-wide stability and competitiveness. Despite providing a solid signal of the Treasury’s commitment to sustainable finance, the #MansionHouse package did not drive forwards Labour’s pledges on transition plans. In our latest #blog, E3G's Joe Dillon explains what next steps the Chancellor could take 👇 https://lnkd.in/emSE8pRW

The final #COP29 outcome has been agreed in Baku. Though a number of notable concerns were raised by developing countries, the new collective quantified goal #NCQG has now been set - at least $300bn by 2035, including a wider set of finance flows from the multilateral development banks who earlier this COP set out an aim of mobilising $185bn by 2030. Key steps have been taken to strengthen previous proposals - a #Baku2Belem roadmap to close the gap to $1.3tr, a review by 2030 that could enhance the goal and a new aim to triple the size of the dedicated UN climate funds that provide high quality #finance to developing countries. The goal still leaves a big gap to fill, especially a drastic need to scale up public #adaptation finance but with these new elements provides a platform on which Parties can build. 🧑💼 Rob Moore, E3G Associate Director, E3G, said: “Setting the goal this COP was essential, and doing so shows that in challenging geo-political circumstances many countries retain the will to work together, even when it’s challenging. Now ambitious countries need to pave the way to Belem together, and show that today's outcome is the start and not the end of the story for reforming the financial system and driving more and better support into developing countries.” 🧑💼 Cosima Cassel, Programme Lead, E3G, said, “Amid a backdrop of intensifying geopolitical crises; domestic, political and fiscal challenges facing countries; and despite some blockers intent on disrupting the process, this deal shows that the majority of countries remain committed to multilateralism and tackling the climate crisis. We have seen strong leadership from countries such as the UK and Brazil, as well as Colombia and Kenya, to push this deal to fruition. It is crucial that Brazil uses its presidency to turbocharge the action we need to 1.5 alive.” 🧑💼Nick Mabey Co-CEO of E3G said “The fact that tough negotiations in Baku finally resulted in a comprehensive new finance goal shows that countries will make hard compromises to keep multilateralism working. Despite worsening geopolitical tensions COP29 shows the Paris Agreement remains the core of global climate action” 👩💼Laura Sabogal, Senior Policy Advisor, E3G, said, "The adoption of the NCQG marks a critical yet imperfect step forward. At the same time, its glaring shortcomings cannot be ignored, with many arguing it reflects a troubling lack of urgency and ambition in addressing the deep inequities at the heart of global climate finance. Despite these flaws, countries showed a willingness to look beyond immediate outcomes, agreeing on a roadmap from Baku to Belem to help realize the vision of the Global Stocktake. As such, the NCQG is not the end—it is a beginning." 📲 E3G experts are available for background, comment and analysis. Please contact our press team at press@e3g.org or reply to this message.

🌍 It’s the final day of #COP29 🌍 💪 Following the text drop yesterday, the Presidency called a "Qurultay" - a Plenary session for Parties to feedback views on text. With COP29 supposedly wrapping up today, Ministers worked through the night to bridge stark divides and hold onto hope for a balanced outcome. Blame is falling on the Azeri Presidency. Reports are circulating that they aren't listening to Ministerial pairs and have been obstructive to landing zone options. Forceful calls for rapid progress and to "stop the circus" indicated countries are losing patience. 📑 New iterations of text are expected sometime today. These texts will be the last option for substantial progress to be made before COP29 is due to wrap up, so much is at stake as parties work to bridge the divides. Stay tuned for updates!

🙌 President Prabowo has pledged that #Indonesia - one of the world's largest consumers and producers of coal - will retire all coal and fossil-fuel-fired power plants within the next 15 years. At #G20, he also announced the country will build 75 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2040. Indonesia currently sources >60% of its electricity from coal and still has 5GW of captive coal in the pipeline. Moving its coal phaseout date forward is a major development from the new Government. The move to end coal use is “very significant” and a surprise, Matt Webb, Associate Director, E3G told The Guardian's Damian Carrington "It’s a significant turnaround for a major exporter and a major user of coal power,” https://lnkd.in/e8YE2bku

After years of uncertainty and delay, this clear direction is a much-needed boost for the industry. Whilst we will need to see further investment next year, this is the right first step towards lowering energy bills and creating new, good quality jobs in British manufacturing."
📢 Today, we’re setting out the next steps in the Warm Homes Plan, kickstarting a homegrown heat pump industry. Find out more 👇 https://lnkd.in/eUpbTQ8a

NEW BLOG 🚨As #COP29 enters the endgame, negotiated outcomes must reiterate commitments to the Global Stocktake energy package. Diplomatic and political surround-sound needs to build confidence amongst countries that ambitious NDCs and targets are desirable, feasible, and fundable in the run-up to COP30. The number of countries with coal power under development has halved since 2015, from 67 to 33, with 95% of planned capacity concentrated in just ten countries.
