Despite many in the country feeling less optimistic about society and their own personal economic situation ahead of the Autumn budget, our latest research covered by Fundraising UK Ltd shows that it's by no means all doom and gloom for charities. Nearly two-thirds want to see greater government funding for the third sector – with some clear preferences for particular sectors – and many people now donate more than they did a few years ago. This could present an opportunity for charities to grow support and make a powerful case for a stronger role at the heart of policy making and service delivery. To achieve this, they need to truly understand who their target audiences are and how to inspire and motivate them to engage. https://lnkd.in/e93P4-Ng
Our latest research covered by Civil Society Media Ltd underscores the huge opportunity for charities to engage older social media users. By doing so, they can help spread awareness of good causes and act as a counterbalance to the populist narratives that often dominate online discussions. If non-profits want to turn more of the seven million Baby Boomers who use these channels every day into online campaigners – they first need to understand what motivates them to act.
If charities can better engage older supporters on social media there is “huge potential to spread the message to a wider audience”, according to new research. A survey by Eden Stanley found that 30% of the UK population post about charitable causes online, though engagement varies by age. It said there is scope for charities to engage further with Baby Boomers (those aged between 60 and 78), as many are using online channels most days, yet only 14% of them are posting about causes.
News that Redbridge council is considering moving those living in temporary accommodation into social housing hundreds of miles away will leave many families across London facing an anxious wait. Shelter's excellent #MADEINSOCIALHOUSING campaign from earlier this year – link in comments – showed that one of its greatest benefits is how social housing fosters a sense of community by enabling people to live near their friends, families, workplaces and childhood neighbourhoods. We know from our CharityTracker data that people are increasingly relying on engagement with their local community in their daily lives – a trend that has grown since the pandemic. Housing should be built where the need is – to keep communities together and individuals close to their support networks and their sources of income. https://lnkd.in/eaWAq-HD
The violent protests of the last week directed at refugees and minority groups have caused huge concern for communities up and down the country. Amid the toxicity, it would be easy for those supporting refugees to lose hope. Joe Lepper's piece in Charity Digital brings some much-needed balance to the conversation. It references data from our recent study, which finds a majority of people in the UK are sympathetic to asylum seekers. We've been researching this for years and have consistently found the UK to be a much kinder place than this violence suggests. https://lnkd.in/eys7crJt
In May 2024, just before the election was announced, we ran some survey questions into the CharityTracker to gauge agreement with eight statements representing ‘progressive’ or ‘inclusive’ attitudes. Later in the survey, we asked respondents to estimate the percentage of the UK population that agreed with these same statements, with interesting results. Here's what we found... https://lnkd.in/eupUW2Yi
More on refugees. The UK public is more sympathetic than you might think.
Charity Times today is leading with our refugee research. Today’s angle is that more than a third of people in the UK are open to supporting refugee charities, but don’t. With such a large group, motivations to support will vary widely – and NGOs that learn to speak to a broader constituency will reap the benefits. https://lnkd.in/ep8CRTGf (Sorry - paywall) By the way, if you’d like to look at the research data, and interact with it, you can see it in the public bit of the CharityTracker. https://lnkd.in/eyk9gZtK
Why are charities struggling to achieve relevance and visibility with younger audiences? Social media influencers and consumer brands are often much more top-of-mind when looking for ways to ‘do more good’. They are also more trusted. If you're looking to target a younger audience to support your cause, understanding what motivates them can help you find a way to connect and build trust and relevancy, and use your brand's power to instigate change. That's what the report told us. Download your copy of Tomorrow's Donor, Today and delve deeper into each donortype. Who's currently in your donor base? https://lnkd.in/dp3Cp2mB

Eden Stanley's founder Joe Barrell is featured in Research Live this week, talking about brand purpose, not just in the third sector. https://lnkd.in/ewWnVwNu
The research industry must help brands understand attitudes to social purpose if they are to engage with consumers, argues Joe Barrell: https://lnkd.in/ewWnVwNu #mrx
