We have published our annual review of electricity generation in Britain. In 2024, zero-carbon sources made up more than half (51%) of Britain's electricity supply, an increase from 43% in 2021. This growth is accompanied by a noticeable reduction in gas usage and a significant rise in wind energy generation, leading to the lowest carbon intensity recorded to date. In December 2024, wind energy accounted for 39% of Britain's electricity mix, the highest among all sources, while gas contributed 29%. Zero-carbon sources delivered 56% of Britain’s electricity generation, 4% lower than in December 2023. The carbon intensity was 126 gCO₂/kWh, a 3% increase from December 2023; however, the rolling 12-month average continues to maintain the lowest value of the previous four years at 125 gCO₂/kWh. In November 2024, Britain’s electricity mix saw a greater reliance on gas and a decline in wind energy’s share, contributing to the lowest zero-carbon generation for November in the previous four years. Despite a higher carbon intensity for November 2024 compared to November 2023 & 2022, long-term trends indicate ongoing decarbonisation efforts, with the 12-month average carbon intensity remaining the lowest of the previous four years, and a growing share of zero-carbon sources over the 12-month period. Great to have Mawdsleys on cero.earth, helping them drive to net zero. Mawdsleys, founded in 1825, is the UK’s largest independent pharmaceutical wholesaler. They supply both licensed and unlicensed medicines globally, partnering with healthcare providers to ensure timely delivery. With a strong international presence, they offer services, such as logistics, over-labelling, and third-party logistics. By partnering with edenseven and utilising cero.earth, Mawdsleys is increasing their awareness of their scope 1, 2 & 3 emissions, enabling them to plan an effective decarbonisation strategy and progress towards net zero. In the UK, the combined energy capacity of all solar PV, onshore, and offshore wind projects that received planning permission in the past 12 months has declined by 36% compared to the previous 12-month period. Offshore wind experienced the most significant decrease, with the energy capacity from approved projects dropping by 62%. Onshore wind also saw a substantial decline during this period. Despite the decline, the total energy capacity from approved solar PV projects in the last 12 months is the third-highest of any 12-month period in the past 15 years. We have released our quarterly review of the UK's Renewable Energy Planning Database (REPD) using DESNZ data. Yesterday, I attended EMEX London 2024 (Net Zero & Energy Management EXPO) at the ExCeL centre in London. I witnessed a number of fascinating talks from large corporations and industry experts ranging from the technologies available to reach net zero to select case studies showcasing their progress. Overall, the event was very positive and it was encouraging to see the innovative technologies available to businesses to help them decarbonise. However, a key theme that arose was the lack of education/awareness of low-carbon technologies, as well as the business benefits of implementing a robust net zero strategy. This is supported by edenseven's recent FTSE250 report which emphasised a lack of net zero prioritisation by some of the UK's largest businesses, evidenced by sliding net zero targets, failure to measure & disclose emissions, particularly scope 3, and rising emissions. If you want to read the full report, I have included the link in the comments. If you need help with your net zero strategy, contact edenseven. #EMEX #UK #netzero #carbonemissions

In October, wind power was the leading source of electricity generation in Britain, narrowly surpassing gas. Notably, during October, zero coal was used in Britain's electricity generation, following the closure of the Ratcliffe power plant, the UK’s last coal-fired station. This marks a significant milestone, considering that coal has been used to generate electricity in the UK for over 140 years and accounted for nearly 40% of the UK's electricity generation in 2012.
