Well-researched visual piece in the Financial Times today entitled ⚡ ⚡ "Petrol cars on the way out. Are you ready to go electric?" ⚡ ⚡ After painting a utopia "Greenwell" where there are affordable #EVs, plentiful charging, dynamic pricing, V2G, car-sharing and car-free zones [NB not so far away! 🙂 ], they look at potential barriers to people switching: Upfront costs, range & charging, charging costs and driving less. There are lots of good graphs showing the "state of the nation" and the positive trends in vehicle costs, vehicle range, charging rollout, time and cost to charge and more (although unfortunately behind a paywall), and also highlight some areas which need attention. The Zapmap Insights team were pleased to work closely with Lucy Rodgers and Nassos Stylianou from the FT providing data on charger growth, our price index, time to charge and EV driver behaviour. WHAT’S THE ‘COST OF DRIVING ELECTRIC?’ Save £1,000 a year in running costs *per* used (or new) car, maybe much more. *Based on 8,500m p/a at home 🔌 regular tariff. NEW WORLD ORDER? TRUMP GIFTS ‘GOLDEN AGE’ TO 🇨🇳 AS 🇺🇸 VACATES CLIMATE LEADERSHIP STAGE (AGAIN). There were few surprises as the 47th president confirmed he was going to do what he said he would: • “Drill baby drill” - unfettered oil and gas expansion • Withdrawal from Paris Climate Agreement • (NB US is by far world’s biggest polluter per capita) • Tearing up of Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) • Revoke Electric Vehicle mandates (50% new by 2030) • Hike tariffs on Imported Goods The trouble is that, while the US has an outsized influence on global affairs, it’s only represents ~4% of human population, and the world will keep turning today; turning away from combustion, towards electrification. Nature abhors a vacuum of course, there is colossal and growing demand for cleaner technologies, like EVs, wind, solar, batteries and electric heating, and other countries will gleefully pick up the slack. While China is set to be the single biggest beneficiary, other countries like South Korea, Australia, Scandinavia and possibly the UK could be big net beneficiaries of the switch to electrification. Where does leave this US? Well, stuck at around 10% of new car sales being all-electric for the foreseeable future, while other nations accelerate further away from them. Marco Rubio, Trump’s first political appointment, articulates why the US has gone from progressive to protectionist (and that never works well; search Smoot-Hawley Act, the tariff that brought about and exacerbated the Great Depression*): “The Chinese have basically concluded that America is sort of a tired, great power in decline. That they are on a path over the next 20 to 30 years to supplant us, irrespective of what happens.” In short, the new administration is hastening this decline, as the ⚡️ megatrend will Trump politicians, even with the ‘disrupter-in-Chief’. DOES BREAKING OUT OF 🇬🇧 ECONOMIC ‘DOOM LOOP’ REQUIRE FRESH THINKING? Making it harder to trade with the biggest international partners - whether it’s Europe, or in this case China - just because rich non-dom media barons or right wing disaster capitalists don’t like it, seems like shooting ourselves in both feet. Getting closer to China in particular seems like a smart move to me, as that’s where the future of the business of technology lies, including #ElectricVehicles and #CleanEnergy. It’s my sincere hope that Rt Hon Rachel Reeves has seen Ed Conway’s ‘Carmageddon’ video👇🏼 and that encouraging Chinese electric car companies to come to the biggest EV market in Europe, with its tariff free environment, functional ZEV mandate, stability (4 yrs of an electoral cycle) & empty factories, is on the table.
