We are proud to have CATH recognised as an ELIXIR-UK service and have the people behind it in our network (Christine Orengo, UCL) 🎉 CATH is not only a Global Biodata Coalition Resource but also an ELIXIR Core Data Resource for its invaluable support in protein structure
Our featured GCBR of the week is CATH, a free, publicly available online resource that provides information on the evolutionary relationships of protein domains.

👥 The Unsung Heroes of Research: Data Stewards Behind every well-managed dataset, there’s a data steward ensuring data quality, accessibility, and compliance. While their work is often behind the scenes, they are critical to the success of research and data-driven projects. What Does a Data Steward Do? Data stewards are guardians of data quality and usability. Their role goes beyond handling data—they ensure it’s accurate, #FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), and aligned with regulations. 🔍 Data Quality Control • Keeping data consistent, reliable, and error-free. • Enforcing standards and policies. 📂 Documentation and Metadata • Creating metadata for better understanding and reuse. • Bridging gaps between researchers, IT, and stakeholders. 🔒 Compliance and Security • Ensuring data meets privacy rules like GDPR. • Managing access to sensitive information. 🤝 Supporting Collaboration • Guiding researchers in data sharing. • Enabling cross-team cooperation with accessible data. Why Do Data Stewards Matter? With data driving decisions, poorly managed data can lead to costly mistakes. Data stewards prevent this by maintaining high standards, enabling better decisions, and unlocking the full potential of data. 💡 Are you a data steward, or do you work with one? Share your experiences in the comments! Let’s celebrate the vital work of these unsung heroes. #DataStewards #DataManagement #FAIRData #OpenScience #ResearchData

🎄 Day 23 of ELIXIR-UK's #AdventCalendar: Joining the dots on how ELIXIR resources support user experience We're approaching the end of our advent calendar campaign. Still, we couldn't finish it without featuring this new blog post by Allyson Lister and Marek Suchánek, connecting the dots in research data management. Discover how FAIRsharing and the Data Stewardship Wizard integrate to support FAIR principles across the entire data lifecycle. In this latest blog post, they dive into how ELIXIR is joining up the dots in research data management to drive better collaboration, efficiency, and user experience. 🎁 Read today's special: Joining up the research data management dots https://lnkd.in/e2kbQffk Funded by OSTrails and ELIXIR-UK DaSH (BBSRC & Medical Research Council) Oxford e-Research Centre University of Oxford #ELIXIRUKAdvent #ResearchDataManagement #RDM #FAIRData #OpenScience #DataStewardship

🎄✨ ELIXIR UK Advent Calendar – Day 20 ✨🎄 The next chapter in our #FAIRytale journey: A Manchester Adventure After exploring the foundational lessons of FAIR principles with Phillip Crout, today’s story takes us to the The University of Manchester, where the ELIXIR UK Fellow, Saskia Lawson-Tovey, embarked on a quest to adapt ELIXIR-UK’s FAIR Pointers course for a new audience. 📖 The Plot Thickens: - The challenge: Reshape a 3-hour course into a 90-minute workshop accessible across all disciplines. - The magic: Mentimeter quizzes, UoM-specific resources, and seamless collaboration between ELIXIR and UoM’s Open Research Office. - The outcome: A pilot workshop with great sign-ups, high engagement and good feedback. This successful “FAIRy Tale” doesn’t end here – Saskia at Manchester is making this workshop a regular feature by expanding FAIR training across departments. The moral of the story? Collaboration can turn challenges into opportunities. 🔗 Read the story here: https://lnkd.in/esdQzTeq Funded by BBSRC and Medical Research Council ELIXIR #FAIRPrinciples #OpenResearch #TrainingInnovation #AdventCalendar

🎄✨ ELIXIR UK Advent Calendar – Day 18 ✨🎄 #FAIRytales of Open Data with Phillip Crout Once upon a time (in October 2022), Phillip hosted an all-day seminar at the MRC Biostatistics Unit. The mission? To gather researchers and explore the challenges of open-data practices. The result? A journey through recurring themes and vital lessons for better research data management Key takeaways from this FAIRytale: 📂 Long-term data hosting is critical – Avoid the dreaded 404! Platforms like Zenodo and Figshare ensure your data is available "happily ever after." 🧬 Metadata matters – A little extra effort saves future researchers hours of frustration. Phillip's seminar proved that when we get the basics of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) right, everyone benefits. Future research might just thank you for the effort! 🔗 Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/eYCMpu5f Funded as part of ELIXIR-UK DaSH BBSRC & Medical Research Council ELIXIR University of Cambridge #OpenData #FAIRPrinciples #FAIRyTaleBiology #ScienceOutreach #AdventCalendar

We exist to enable the UK life sciences community, and the Digital RTPs that support #research and #innovation. We're proud to see the results of our community members' efforts. Check the new UKRI research data policy framework 👇
We welcome the development of this new policy framework and through our work in #FAIRdata tools and infrastructure programmes such as ELIXIR-UK and BioFAIR UK, we support the opportunities to champion an open research culture. As members of the #DataScience community, researchers from the Earlham Institute participated in workshops with UK Research and Innovation during this year, to inform the policy development and join discussions in open data and open software. We look forward to seeing the draft publication in Spring next year. https://okt.to/1Qmpx2
