Energy Institute member, Professor Vanesa Castan Broto, is leading a new £3 million project, ‘Mainstreaming Gender Equality and Social Inclusion for a Just Energy Transition in Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania' (JustGESI). This project brings together leading institutions in each country, to deliver a transformative programme of research integrating engineering with critical social science.
Gender equality and social inclusion can easily be overlooked in the transition to clean energy. A major new research project aims to change that.

I was honoured to attend the Cleantech Business Forum on 16th October as a delegate from the Energy Institute at the University of Sheffield. The event, held at the Residence of the Belgian Ambassador in London, was graciously hosted by H.E. the Ambassador of Belgium to the United Kingdom and the Economic & Commercial Counsellor of #Belgium-Wallonia. During the forum, I had the pleasure of engaging with many outstanding peers from the renewable energy industry. The inspiring presentations and a thought-provoking conversation with Dr Xavier Vanden Eynde motivated me to approach evaluations of #hydrogen supply chain resilience from a more comprehensive and practical perspective, moving beyond typical #resilience strategies such as resource redundancy. Forums like this are invaluable for facilitating research, shaping policies, and building international cooperation. It's one year since the historic #Flight100, where we proudly contributed to testing the 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) used onboard ✈️ We're honoured to have collaborated with exceptional teams across research and industry to make this happen: Virgin Atlantic, Boeing, Rolls-Royce, Imperial College London, ICF, RMI, Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom. 🧪 With the UK SAF Mandate set to begin in January 2025, we're continuing to help create a more sustainable aviation industry at our SAF-IC facility. 🏢 SAF-IC is first of its kind in the UK to develop, test and certify new aviation fuels, all in one place. Today marks one year since #Flight100 – the historic flight that proved 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a safe, drop-in replacement for fossil fuel, delivering a 64% life cycle reduction in emissions. It remains a privilege to have been onboard with our amazing teams and consortium partners that made it happen. Radical collaboration at its best. Yet one year on from this call to action, we’re still talking about the same issue – our barrier remains SAF availability. From 1 January, the first phase of the UK SAF Mandate kicks in and we’ll be flying 2% of fuel as SAF on UK-departing Virgin Atlantic flights. We’re supportive of the mandate but there is a shortage of SAF in the UK and globally to meet 10% SAF by 2030. To kickstart a thriving domestic SAF industry and scale up supply we need a Revenue Certainty Mechanism in 2025 to stimulate investment, with industry, oil majors and private capital all playing their part. Our message remains the same. If enough SAF is made, we will fly it. Today’s theme at #COP29 is Urbanisation, Transport and Tourism. It’s been nearly a year since our researchers were involved in a historic transatlantic flight that marked a major milestone in the development of sustainable aviation fuels. Flight100, by Virgin Atlantic, marked a major milestone in the development of sustainable aviation fuels, as the first commercial airline to use the replacement for jet fuel to fly across the Atlantic. Researchers from the Energy Institute at the University of Sheffield helped test the fuel in its SAF research and development facility - the first of its kind in the UK to help develop, test and certify new fuels all in one place - key to bringing new fuels to market. Earlier this year the UK sustainable aviation fuels Clearing House was officially launched, marking a major step in enabling the UK to bring new fuels to market and help reduce carbon emissions from the aviation industry. Led by the Energy Institute and supported by engineering and environmental consultancy Ricardo plc, the UK SAF Clearing House provides support for the development, testing, qualification, and production of sustainable aviation fuels. It's fantastic to be working collaboratively with the Institute for Sustainable Food at the University of Sheffield and Future Greens, on a research project that combines both food and energy research to advance sustainable farming practices. #COP29
We’re continuing to highlight the impact of our research at the Institute for Sustainable Food during #COP29. Today’s theme at #COP29 is Food, Water and Agriculture. Researchers from the Institute for Sustainable Food and Energy Institute at the University of Sheffield are working with Future Greens, a Sheffield-based SME specialising in controlled-environment agriculture, on a research project designed to improve the sustainability of growing food. The project aims to reduce dependency on current synthetic fertilisers in the UK farming industry, which have become an economic and environmental concern. Unlike traditional farming systems that grow crops in soil, hydroponics uses vertical water-based systems to quickly grow plants like leafy green vegetables. Earlier this year it was announced that The University of Sheffield will co-lead a new £38 million centre to develop planet-friendly alternatives to animal proteins that could soon be a sustainable and nutritious part of our diets. “With a growing world population projected to reach 10 billion by 2050, the demand for protein and the need for people to have access to a safe, nutritious diet will continue to rise. However, for this to be sustainable, it's imperative we find ways to meet this demand by supplementing traditional animal agriculture with alternative protein sources including from plants and other sources.” - says Louise Dye, Co-Director at the Institute for Sustainable Food at the University of Sheffield. The University of Sheffield will lead on the centre’s research to deliver alternatives that offer benefits for health, and which are affordable and appealing to the public. Our researchers will also identify new business opportunities for farmers and producers, and work to future-proof the UK’s protein supply against reliance on imports. We’re continuing to highlight the impact of our research at the Energy Institute during #COP29. Today’s theme at #COP29 is Human Development, Children and Youth, Health and Education. Engineers at The University of Sheffield are working with mopo (Mobile Power) to develop longer-lasting, smart batteries called MOPO Batteries. These innovative batteries are designed to bring clean and affordable energy to off-grid and unstable power network communities in Africa. How do MOPO Batteries work? 🔋 MOPO Batteries are portable, charged at solar-powered hubs. ⚡They can power a range of appliances, from AC devices like cooking equipment and fridges to DC devices like lighting, e-mobility, and mobile phone charging. As #COP29 gets underway, we're proud to highlight the impact of our research at the Energy Institute. Today’s theme at #COP29 is Energy, Peace, Relief and Recovery. 🌍 Earlier this year our research, led by S.C. Lenny Koh, revealed that only four G20 countries are set for a positive ecological footprint by 2050. Findings from the study show that Argentina, Brazil, Canada and Russia are set to have positive ecological footprints, while the UK and other 15 countries are on course for a negative impact. During the study our researchers used a new method for predicting ecological footprints, allowing more accurate assessments of policy effects on the environment. ♻ In other news, research led by our member Fanran Meng examined the environmental impact of plastic products versus nonplastic alternatives across various sectors. Fanran’s research revealed that substituting plastics with alternative materials is likely to result in increased greenhouse gas (GHC) emissions. Despite concerns about plastics' contribution to GHG emissions, the study revealed that in 15 out of 16 applications examined, plastic products actually result in lower GHG emissions compared to alternatives.
