Dominic Matteo admits that his move to Blackburn Rovers 20 years ago coincided with his biggest problem gambling issues, but recently returned to their Academy to help their U21 and U18 squads learn from his mistakes as part of our valuable EFL-wide programme. Now in its seventh season, the concept continues to educate players and staff throughout all 72 clubs on the importance of an informed approach to gambling, with several factors such as competitive nature, free time during traveling or injury periods and access to sporting knowledge all contributing to a statistical likelihood that professional athletes are up to six times more likely than the general population to experience gambling-related harm. During this year’s Addiction Awareness Week – where high profile advocates like HRH The Princess of Wales are discussing how ‘addiction affects everyone but recovery is possible’ – Dominic is a perfect embodiment of this year’s #AAW24 theme. #gambling #gamblingharm #harmprevention #problemgambling

The UK's Addiction Awareness Week (30th November - 7th December) begins today, under the apt theme of 'addiction affects everyone, but recovery is possible'. The premise rings true among our team, whose lived experience of (and recovery from) gambling-related harm underpins our work. Stay tuned for more details of how EPIC staff found recovery throughout the week... #AAW24 #gambling #gamblingharm #harmprevention #problemgambling

Stevin 'Hedake' Smith continues to make a considerable impression on NCAA student-athletes, with one rising star from the Butler University basketball program telling the #NCAA website that his message struck a chord, considering the gambling-related approaches he receives in his DMs. All 18 of Butler's sports teams heard from both Smith and Patrick Chester last week, as they added to the 75,000 attendees and counting on our gambling harm prevention program for college athletes across the US. Randy Livingston will represent EPIC when The National Council of Legislators from Gaming States (NCLGS) hosts the second in its series of panels dealing with athletics and gaming. Player harassment, influencers and mental health issues will all be topics for the Special Committee on Education when attendees hear straight from Randy and other star athletes and influencers at the NCLGS Winter Meeting, December 12-15 at Caesars New Orleans. Former college and NBA basketball player Livingston – who was a legendary high school player in Louisiana – says: "As someone who’s seen the evolution of both athletics and gaming, it’s critical we address how expanded gaming intersects with player welfare. "Athletes already face immense pressure, and the rise of sports betting introduces new challenges, including harassment and mental health impacts. Thoughtful legislation and proactive regulation are essential to safeguard athletes while promoting responsible gaming practices." #gambling #gamblingharm #harmprevention #problemgambling

It's being reported that only two of the top 45 highest-grossing mobile games on the Google Play store are conforming to Advertising Standards Authority rules on advertising, which compels developers to disclose if their games contain loot boxes. This is a new development on a story which returns to the news cycle around this time each year, as parents prepare to buy games for their children at Christmas, potentially without realising that they contain loot boxes, which are known to include gambling-like mechanisms and 'risk and reward' elements that aren't covered by traditional gambling bans for under 18s. It's a topic that we covered via The Gambling Harm Podcast this time last year, shortly before our re-brand, so the messaging and advice we shared then remains pertinent now, especially if you're a parent or guardian buying this kind of game for a child for the first time this year. If the Rolling Stone article we shared yesterday piqued your interest in Elizabeth Thielen, LPC, PCGC's story, it's an opportune time to re-share a small segment of the remarkable circumstances she came through before joining EPIC. This #Thanksgiving, we're thankful to have people like Liz on our team, providing a vital human touch that others can learn from, in our ongoing bid to prevent gambling-related harm. #Thanksgiving2024 #gambling #gamblingharm #harmprevention #problemgambling
