Congratulations to this year’s Stafford Beer Medal winners! Koteswara Rao Ivaturi and Cecil Chua have been awarded the medal for their paper ‘Rethinking time: Ubichronic time and its impact on work’. This paper explores how ubiquitous technology influences people’s perception of time and introduces a new concept called "ubichronic time". The paper suggests that ubichronic time differs significantly from existing perceptions of time and will have a profound impact on the way we work. In many places, police and other law enforcement officers are now using body worn cameras to record their interactions with people. What do the officers themselves think about this technology, especially in ethically ambiguous or 'grey' situations? 👮💭 This article in issue 33(4) — by Jaeung Lee (Louisiana Tech University), Chul Woo Yoo (Florida Atlantic University), Jingguo Wang (The University of Texas at Arlington) & H.R.Rao (The University of Texas at Arlington) — presents a study of law enforcement officers' perspectives on these body worn cameras: especially their perspectives on motivations, risks, and ethical complications. Advance fee fraud (AFF) scamming involves tricking victims into sending payments for something that is ultimately never delivered. This kind of deception predates the Internet, but there's something about the digital environment that we now live in seems to make things worse. 🕵🏼 This article in issue 33(4) — by Alain Claude Tambe Ebot, Mikko Siponen & Volkan Topalli, titled "Towards a cybercontextual transmission model for online scamming" — presents a study of 20 actual AFF scammers in Cameroon. The study challenges the traditional social learning theories of criminal behaviour and proposes a new model that augments the social-learning perspective with insights about the role of information technology. 💡 Read the article: https://lnkd.in/gWC26qhJ Article DOI: 10.1080/0960085X.2023.2210772

When working to develop theories, Information Systems researchers often seek theories with wider rather than narrower scope. This article in issue 33(4) — by Mikko Siponen, Tuula Klaavuniemi & Quan Xiao, titled "Splitting versus lumping: narrowing a theory’s scope may increase its value" — presents a detailed argument for the importance of specialisation (in other words, a narrower rather than wider scope) for scientific progress, including in Information Systems research. 🔬 Read the article: https://lnkd.in/gvwx8EKD Article DOI: 10.1080/0960085X.2023.2208380

A recent digital innovation that we may often take for granted — and yet would have been the stuff of science fiction decades ago! — is the ability to buy groceries online. 🛒 This article in issue 33(4) — by Marvin Auf der Landwehr, Thorsten Schoormann, Christoph von Viebahn & Maik Trott, titled "From purchase to pantry – exploring archetypes and strategies in the context of e-grocery fulfilment" — presents a taxonomy of all the many complex ways in which your humble online grocery order is fulfilled behind the scenes. Notably, the paper presents six archetypes like "parcel champions" and "collaboration specialists" to help make sense of that complexity. 📦️ Read the article: https://lnkd.in/gxrQpFdf Article DOI: 10.1080/0960085X.2023.2180446
