Evenbreak ambassador, Dr Shani Dhanda, talking about the huge importance of teaching children about disability and its history #DisabilityHistoryMonth #DisabilityInclusion #TalentFirst
In 2023, only 13% of schools in the UK planned to teach about Disability History Month. 😮 This Disability History Month, I’m changing that—and it’s all completely free. and accessible! Whether you're a teacher, parent, or caregiver or connected to a community of parents, carers, or disabled people in your workplace (e.g., employee resource groups), you'll definitely want to share this. Sign up to my newsletter for early access. https://lnkd.in/eGXPaZ8K Does that stat of 13% shock you, as it did me? Video Description: Shani, a South Asian Disabled woman, is being interviewed on ITV News. She is wearing a dark, multicoloured printed shirt. The news presenter is a white woman wearing a red dress. Video Transcript: Presenter: I'm joined by Dr Shani Dhanda, who was voted the UK's most influential disabled person this year. Dr. Dhanda, thank you very much for joining us. Now, first of all, let's take a look at some of those figures we've been hearing about - 26% of teachers saying this isn't a priority for their leadership team. What do you make of that? Shani: I think the research is really important, but the findings are quite disheartening. There are lots of other different awareness, days and months that are talked about and children are educated on. And disability is a topic that affects every single community and culture. So I would like more schools and broader society to be educated on this topic. But I'm also not surprised. I myself went to a special needs primary school and we were not taught anything about Disability History Month or the Disability Rights Movement. #DisabilityHistoryMonth #Accessibility #SocialModelofDisability
