Today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a time to celebrate inclusion, equality, and the contributions of people with disabilities worldwide! 🌍 Norcia, from Madagascar, was born deaf and struggled in school. Our teams trained her teacher in sign language, helping Norcia gain confidence and engage in class. Now, she's a Humanity & Inclusion ambassador! And she’s breaking barriers and empowering others 💙 Her journey shows what’s possible when we work together for inclusion. Let’s continue to create a world where everyone can thrive! #IDPWD2024 📸 © Mangafeo / HI

Our colleague Antonina Telytsia tells her story of how war in Ukraine has affected her and her family, and how she came to be involved in HI’s work. Before the escalation of the war, Antonina lived a peaceful life in Mariupol, Ukraine. She was a teacher and lived comfortably with her husband and two daughters. In late 2021, her youngest daughter Varvara was diagnosed with a congenital heart condition. She needed to go to Kyiv for heart surgery but in February 2022 Russian troops crossed the border. Omaid, 11, from #Afghanistan lost his leg to a landmine when he was 5. HI has provided him with elbow crutches and physiotherapy care in preparation for a prosthetic leg, which he had not yet received due to his family’s poor economic situation and security concerns. The upcoming opening of a prosthetics and #rehabilitation centre built by HI in Kunduz near Omaid's home could change his life! Omaid follows his path towards a better future with determination. He attends school, plays cricket, and has begun learning tailoring, but dreams of becoming a doctor to help others in similar situations! 💙 📸 E. Blanchard / HI

On the second day of the #SiemReapSummit for a #MineFreeWorld , HI with other campaigners of ICBL including survivors from different regions made it very clear, that a mine free world can only be achieved if the Mine Ban Treaty is respected by all states. Standing in long rows, campaigners were welcoming delegates at the entrance of the conference hall with slogans in different languages – all sharing one clear message: Antipersonnel mines are banned without exception! The transfer of antipersonnel mines from the US to #Ukraine is not acceptable. These weapons always kill, maim and threaten mainly civilians. States parties should condemn any use by any actor under any circumstances.

“I had embedded this fear of landmines in my head so strongly that I thought whenever I walked anywhere, I wouldn’t be able to get rid of it” As part of the The Telegraph Christmas appeal 2024, HI's Alma Taslidžan shares her experience growing up in country affected by landmines and talks about the importance of protecting civilians in #Ukraine from explosive remnants 👇 https://lnkd.in/e7zCwFJ5

Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. 736 million women and girls worldwide have been subjected to physical or sexual violence at least once in their life. These dire figures are even worse for those with disabilities, who are subjected to up to ten times as much gender-based violence. We work to prevent violence against women by providing training as well as raising awareness on the protection of women and girls with disabilities. We also support women with disabilities who are at risk or who are survivors of sexual and gender-based violence with mental health and psychosocial support. Now more than ever, with the increasing number of crises around the world, we need to eliminate violence against women.

Our colleague Noor Bimbashi describes the horrific impact of forced displacement and bombardments on people with disabilities in #Gaza: “People with hearing disabilities are unable to know when they have to evacuate, relying on people’s facial expressions to understand that the danger of bombings is near. People with visual impairments have to focus to understand from where the sound of bombing and shooting is coming from, left uncertain and scared, not knowing what is going to happen next. The demand for assistive devices like wheelchairs and walking frames increases as new injuries result from the military escalation. Many devices are destroyed or left behind when persons with disabilities have to flee to safer shelters. The lack of maintenance for assistive devices, the unavailability of the devices in the local market, and the difficulties in procuring them from outside Gaza significantly affect people’s recovery and lead to secondary complications.” HI continues to call for a permanent and immediate ceasefire. Every minute without a ceasefire prolongs the unnecessary suffering of the people of Gaza, and makes the need to end the trauma of war more urgent. #CeaseFireNow

We strongly condemn the reported decision by the Biden administration to transfer antipersonnel landmines to #Ukraine. The decision undermines the credibility of U.S. commitments and sets a dangerous precedent that could weaken global efforts to eliminate the use of #landmines. The use of landmines in Ukraine has already left a devastating legacy of human suffering, hindered post-conflict recovery, and endangered future generations. Full statement: https://lnkd.in/ehygN-ba
