I sidste uge deltog jeg i ExCreds Africa seminar i Johannesburg, hvor jeg fik lejlighed til at tale om de mange udfordringer, som Afrikas regeringer står overfor. Rekordmange lande i Afrika har valg i år, og normalt er tiden efter valget en periode for økonomisk konsolidering og afbalancering. Men som de nye regeringer i Kenya, Nigeria og Senegal har måttet sande, er det svært at tilfredsstille vælgernes forventninger om fremgang, når tiden tilsiger vanskelige reformer. Afrika er genstand for mange af tidens geopolitiske markeringer, hvilket kan være en fordel - men kun hvis kontinentet formår ikke at vælge side til fordel den ene eller anden politiske blok. Yesterday’s ExCred Africa 2024 provided insights into the constantly evolving African geopolitical and macroeconomic landscape. ECIC Senior Economist, Marvin Silawule, participated in a panel on ‘The evolving macroeconomic landscape: Impact on trade and insurance’ with John Rossouw, Portfolio and Risk Director, Norsad Capital, Sekete Mokgehle CA (SA), Head, Export Credit Finance Nedbank Corporate and Investment Banking and Jackie Boyce (Payne), Senior Specialist Trade & Working Capital Origination, Absa Group. The panelists discussed debt challenges and issues in resolving sovereign defaults as well as updates on debt restructuring taking place in #Zambia, #Ghana and #Malawi. In the afternoon, ECIC Senior Underwriter, Ntombifuthi Priscilla Mdluli, was part of a panel on ‘The role of ECAs in Africa’. The panel, which included Craig Weitz, Principal: Export Credit Finance, Nedbank Corporate and Investment Banking, Greg Fyfe, Head, ECA Finance and Energy Transition Solutions, Standard Bank Group and Dirk van den Berg, Head of Export Finance Southern Africa, UK Export Finance, delved into operational issues affecting ECAs in Africa.
