If you are keen to discover more about Edge Hill University Every Child Counts (ECC) ehu.ac.uk/ecc maths interventions, read what Carrington School have to say about their experience so far of the *Success@Arithmetic Calculation programme: As a school, we decided to participate in the Success@Arithmetic Calculation programme delivered by Edge Hill University as our curriculum intent has a real focus on developing number fluency for all students. This initiative aims to support some of our pupils who need additional help to become confident and efficient with their general number skills. We believe the programme will be highly effective, as it is designed to include meaningful diagnostic assessments and provides pupils with the opportunity to work in small groups of three, guided by the Lead Teacher and supported by the TA. During the first training session, we realised the importance of the initial interview with each pupil—not just on paper but as a verbal discussion. This approach allowed us to identify each pupils mathematical thinking processes, their use of mathematical language, and their existing knowledge. The feedback from this short interview was invaluable for designing and preparing targeted activities, which are approximately 40 minutes long and conducted three times per week. Using this information, we are going to build on individual pupils’ skills, applying praise and a positive approach to reduce their existing maths anxiety. This will also encourage pupils to transfer the skills and methods they develop during the intervention into their regular maths lessons. The first training session was incredibly useful, and we're grateful for the resources provided! We would also like to express how impressed we are with the professionalism, helpfulness, and efficiency of the team at ECC. Thank you again, and we are looking forward to Session 2 and 3. *Success@Arithmetic Calculation is offered as part of a suite of maths intervention programmes for learners who need support to improve their understanding of number and written calculation skills. Today we held an academic conference for our PGCE Primary Education with QTS students from both Ormskirk campus and Holy Cross College & University Centre. Students participated in a range of sessions including: - Exploring and using the EEF toolkit delivered by Professor David Aldridge -Critical policy analysis delivered by Dr Naomi Hodgson -Early literacy- a diverse perspective delivered by Dr Karen Boardman -Practitioner research to generate knowledge in and out of the classroom delivered by Professor Vicky Duckworth -Exploring causation in educational research delivered by Professor David Aldridge -Social media as a research focus delivered by Dr Naomi Hodgson -Exploring teacher learning spaces delivered by Dr Sue Harrop Exploring Headteachers’ attitudes to early career teacher applicants’ digital footprints delivered by Sian Miles. The conference provided a valuable opportunity for our PGCE Primary Education with QTS students to engage with key educational topics and deepen their knowledge through expert-led sessions.

Last Friday, the Faculty of Education at Edge Hill University hosted an event for computing teachers participating in the Teacher Inquiry in Computing Education (TICE) project. The TICE project is an initiative spearheaded by the Raspberry Pi Computing Education Research Centre at the University of Cambridge. It is supported by Computing At School (CAS) and volunteers, including three staff from Edge Hill University. The TICE project encourages educators to conduct inquiries into their own computing teaching in school. Edge Hill University has supported the TICE project for three years. Last week, teacher participants gathered feedback on their projects and got advice and guidance from representatives from Edge Hill University, the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN), and the University of Cambridge, helping them to move their projects in the right direction. Nicola Looker, Lecturer in Secondary Computer Science Education, said, “The TICE project is an outstanding opportunity for faculty members and computing teachers to share ideas and experiences.” Dr Claire Hawkins, Senior Lecturer in Primary Computing Education, said, "It is really rewarding to help shape the teachers' projects and see them learn more about their own computing teaching."
