About us
Family Rights Group promotes policies and practices that keep children safe within their family and strengthen the family and community networks of those children who cannot live at home. We are a national charity that advises parents, grandparents, relatives and friends about their rights and options when social workers or courts make decisions about their children’s welfare. We work with parents whose children are in need, at risk or are in the care system and with wider family members and friends who are raising children (known as kinship carers).

On the eighth day of Christmas The Relational Social Work Podcast gave to me, Hannah, Matt and Arin, Life Story Work, Relational Activism, Care Leavers' Week, Sian from Switchback, Family Rights Group, Ian Thomas and The Nuffield Family Justice Observatory🎄These episodes are available on any major podcast platform! We had so much fun recording our eighth episode, and also felt really quite vulnerable, but were really touched by the response we received to sharing our own stories💗

Solutions for children designed with the people who know them and love them. That's a central principle of the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Bill presented to Parliament today. We've long campaigned for families to have the opportunity to come up with solutions for their children’s welfare before the state removes them. A new mandate on local authorities to offer this could be a step change in how the state works with, rather than doing to, children and families. Our proposals to define kinship care in primary legislation and creating a new duty on local authorities to publish a local kinship offer have also been adopted. These are important foundational measures towards ensuring that when children cannot remain at home, kinship care is the next explored option. As you would expect, we’ll be working hard to make sure this legislation delivers for children and families. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eP8WiyK3

A big thank you to everyone who contributed to our Big Give Christmas campaign! 🎄🎁 Your generous support helped us to raise over £5,000 for our vital work providing specialist advice and advocating for recognition and support for kinship families. Our brilliant match-funders, including The Reed Foundation, doubled every donation you made. Together, we’re making a real difference to the lives of children and families. We couldn’t do this without you! 💜

Kinship carers provide love and care to children who may otherwise be in the care system with strangers. Our recent survey shows 4 in 10 have to give up work, and a further 2 in 10 reduce their hours, when the children come to live with them. Many families are forced into financial hardship. Thank you Munira Wilson MP, a stalwart champion for kinship families, for putting these findings to Employment Rights Minister Justin Madders today. And for pressing Government to introduce paid employment leave for kinship carers in the Employment Rights Bill. New independent research we commissioned from Alma Economics shows paid leave would not only benefit families by helping them to remain in work, but also deliver economic benefits too, returning £2.20 for every £1 invested. Help us persuade the Government it’s the right thing to do, join our campaign: https://lnkd.in/edBt4pwf

Our 50th celebrations in Parliament recently highlighted our work to improve the child welfare system, including Lifelong Links 🌟 Lifelong Links is our innovative approach, created in partnership with children in care and care leavers, to help build and strengthen relationships with the people who care about them 👨👨👧👧 A big thank you to our supporters including broadcaster Ashley John-Baptiste, musician Fred Again, and MPs Josh MacAlister MP and Alistair Strathern for joining us. Our Build Not Break campaign is calling for Lifelong Links to be available to all children in care and care leavers. https://lnkd.in/dCGR82RC #LifelongLinks #BuildNotBreak
