  • We're proud to share the highlights from our 2023 Science Symposium! 🔬🎥 Held annually for our internal staff, students, and external guests, Fera's Science Symposium provides an excellent platform to demonstrate the impact and quality of our science into industry. This year, the overarching theme was "Food for Thought: Fera's Science in a Changing Landscape", where key speakers presented an array of fantastic talks addressing the most pertinent issues facing our foodscape. Hear from Fera scientists, students, and our external guests from across the sector on the importance of collaboration in science, and how events like Fera's Symposium play an important role in stimulating and inspiring the scientific community. • There is a wealth of regulatory guidance and guidelines driving the assessment of the environmental safety of plant protection products (PPPs), particularly when it comes to pollinators. We test the effects of acute and chronic exposure, oral and contact toxicity, the effects on developing brood, conduct laboratory studies, as well as tunnel and field trials. We use a wide variety of tools - from in vitro rearing of larvae to analytical chemistry – so by the time a product’s environmental safety is being assessed by regulators, they have the data they require. • The UK and global food industries currently face a variety of complex challenges, from unpredictable climate patterns to evolving pest and disease threats. These challenges not only jeopardise food security but also place immense pressure on food supply chains. We believe that no single organisation, sector, or country can overcome these threats alone. Our Enigma model brings together industry experts, growers, and scientists to co-develop practical solutions to pressing issues across the food supply chain. Find out how Enigma fosters impactful partnerships, and advances resilient, science-led solutions for the agri-food sector: https://lnkd.in/emdvwXfq #Enigma #ResearchAndDevelopment #FoodSupplyChain

  • 📢 Calling all aspiring scientists! Fera Science is proud to announce we have another new exciting PhD opportunity in partnership with London Interdisciplinary Doctoral Programme! The project is a collaboration between a world-leading academic institute (Biology at QMUL) and an international centre of excellence in industrial research (Fera Science), thus providing students with training and professional development in diverse areas. At Fera, the student will gain industry experience while running crop disease vectoring experiments within their greenhouse quarantine cubicles. The student will also focus on learning about molecular interactions underlying insect vectoring of crop viruses, learn about biopesticide development from industry experts at Fera, and develop analytical pipelines to study virus-insect-bacteria molecular interactions emerging from the transcriptomic data. If you, or know someone who is interested in Harnessing symbionts for control of vector borne disease in agriculture, please share or apply using the link below > https://hubs.ly/Q02ZyT960 #PhDopportunity #ScienceResearch #FeraScience #Innovation #ResearchCommunity #ScientificJourney #ApplyNow

  • Fera's Programme Manager of Entomology R&D, Dr Larissa Llewellin, brought the audience at our annual Science Symposium up to speed on the success of our first Enigma research project. Enigma I has been focused on investigating a solution to sustainable wireworm control for the vegetable, salad and arable sectors. “The project has been a great example of what we can achieve collaboratively,” she said. “Wireworm is a problem that’s been known to incur over £100,000 worth of damage per field of salad potatoes, but very little research on the pest had been done since the interwar period. Working together with partners including Syngenta, G’s Group, inov3pt, Pearce Seeds LLP, and Elveden Farms Ltd, we’ve filled significant gaps in industry knowledge on pest damage patterns and risk factors – informing more effective IPM strategies on-farm.” Find out more about the project here: https://hubs.ly/Q02Y1M6y0 #Enigma #AgriFood #AgriResearch #Arable
