📑 New Report! With 1.4 billion people and a prosperous economy, #China is a key player in the global climate narrative. Recognizing this, the Chinese government has set ambitious #NetZero targets, committing to peak greenhouse gas emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060. While accelerating the shift towards clean energy is critical, new analysis from FOLU highlights the central role that healthy and sustainable #diets can and must play in meeting these goals. Using multiple climate models, the research compares the agricultural emissions projections of three consumption scenarios by 2050: 👉 Business-as-usual 👉 Full implementation of the Chinese Dietary Guidelines (CDG) 👉 Widespread adoption of the EAT Lancet Planetary Health Diet Critically, the analysis finds that: 📈 Agricultural emissions would reach 904 MtCO2e per year in China if consumption patterns continue on a business-as-usual track, up from a 2020 baseline of 806 MtCO2e. 🌽 Full implementation of the Chinese Dietary Guidelines would result in 46% fewer emissions than the business-as-usual scenario, aligning the agricultural sector with a 1.5C warming pathway. 🍐 Widespread adoption of the Eat Lancet Planetary Health Diet would see the biggest reduction agricultural emissions, resulting in a 51% drop compared to the business-as-usual consumption scenario. 🍚 China’s agricultural-source GHG emissions and associated mitigation potentials vary significantly by region –provinces with the highest emissions also offer the greatest mitigation potential. 🐖 In most provinces, and for China as a whole, reducing methane from livestock production would see the biggest impact Read the report for a deep-dive on key climate and nutrition interlinkages, and why healthy and sustainable diets are a key lever in delivering on the #ParisAgreement 👇 📖 Read report: https://lnkd.in/evurAVKq 💡 Read blog: https://lnkd.in/eBM_ZqMz #COP29 #HealthyDiets #SustainableDiets #EATLancet #FoodSystems #ClimateSolutions #Methane #MethaneEmissions #Agriculture -- WRI Food World Resources Institute Action On Food Food Tank EAT Gunhild Anker Stordalen WWF-China Renmin University of China International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) Minpeng CHEN Nicklas Forsell Shenggen Fan Geist*Studio

📰 Headline from #COP29: A cohort of 30 countries that represent nearly 50% of global methane emissions from organic waste have signed a pledge to reduce their emissions in this sector. Why is this important? Food loss and waste accounts for 8-10% of total greenhouse gas emissions, and the methane produced from food in landfills is a significant contributor. 💡 In a statement, Liz Goodwin, Director of Food Loss and Waste, calls for countries to turn this commitment into action by developing policies that reduce food loss and waste, and invest in alternative processing methods for any food that is wasted. Countries have an opportunity to include diversion of food waste from landfill as an integral part of their climate strategy in their upcoming national climate commitments (NDCs), which are due in early 2025. “China’s rich food heritage, coupled with its commitment to an ecological civilization, provides a solid foundation for moving towards a healthy and sustainable dietary culture.” In this short clip, Shenggen Fan, Chair Professor at China Agricultural University & FOLU Ambassador, outlines the rise of livestock farming in China, and speaks about the potential for the country to be a leader in transforming diets to reduce emissions and improve human health. Interested in learning more? A new paper from FOLU highlights the significant mitigation potential of sustainable and healthy diets in China, and examines the extent to which changes in food consumption can have a positive impact on the environment, climate and our health. It finds that greenhouse gas emissions from China’s agricultural sector could be nearly halved by 2050 if healthy diets were adopted by people in China. Did you know that food and land-use systems account for 10% of China’s total GHG emissions? At #COP29 in Azerbaijan, all eyes are on global leaders to deliver on their climate promises. China, the world’s largest GHG emitter, holds considerable sway in the success of these efforts. With ambitious targets to reach peak carbon emissions before 2030 and carbon neutrality before 2060, the path forward must include all sectors—including food and land use. A new FOLU paper reveals that shifting to healthy and sustainable diets could nearly halve agricultural GHG emissions in China, with emissions cuts achieved primarily through the reduction of methane (CH4 ), accounting for 67-68% of the total GHG emission reductions. China has an opportunity to embrace a large-scale adoption of healthier and more sustainable diets which could lead to substantial improvements in climate change mitigation, human health, nutrition security, and environmental sustainability, benefiting both people and the planet – in China and beyond. 🎤 FOLU's Katie McCoshan sharing some food for thought at #COP29🍉 Over the next year, world leaders face critical opportunities to better integrate food systems into their climate and nature plans, scale up investment, and unite all actors to accelerate transformative #ActionOnFood At #COP29 in Baku, FOLU co-hosted a dynamic workshop exploring how countries can design holistic and food-forward Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to deliver better outcomes for people, nature and climate. Together, we tackled both the challenges and the solutions needed to deliver meaningful progress between now and COP30. ✨ The countries of The Alliance of Champions for Food Systems Transformation (ACF) shared success stories, showing how food-forward NDCs can pave the way for change. Their clear message? Change is possible—and within reach. 🌎 Stay tuned for more insights! 🌱 One year on from the launch of the Alliance of Champions for Food Systems Transformation, we are celebrating the progress made by member countries during Food, Agriculture and Water Day here at COP29, inspiring others to follow their lead, and urging governments & financial institutions to deliver #climatefinance for #foodsystems. We are delighted that the Government of #Tanzania has now announced its intention to join the Alliance, and we very much look forward to seeing what they achieve in partnership with existing members. Here is just a taste of what has been achieved by member countries in the last year: In #Brazil, the promotion of sustainable agroforestry practices via a National Program for Productive Forests (Programa Nacional de Florestas Produtivas). In #Cambodia, the deployment of 1,600 agriculture officers in agricultural communes across the country, developing modern agricultural cooperatives to improve access to markets, capital and water. In #Norway, an annual policy dialogue with farming unions to negotiate policy measures that are tailored to farmers’ needs. In #Rwanda, a commitment by 2030 to halve per capita food waste at the retail and consumer levels, and to reduce food losses in farm production and along supply chains. In #SierraLeone, the implementation of the national flagship ‘Feed Salone’ strategy to drive local food production sustainably. These examples show what’s possible when countries take a ‘whole of government’ approach to food systems transformation. Think of the impact that could be unlocked if more countries signed up to putting food at the centre of their climate action 💡 Learn more at: https://lnkd.in/d5ZuWHtw #COP29 #AllianceOfChampions #ActionOnFood #ACF Jenny Briggs Clement Perry Katie McCoshan Emma Williams James Stapleton David Nabarro Morgan Gillespy World Resources Institute WRI Food WRI Brasil Valeria Llano Arias Chris Hegadorn

Dr Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, Cambodia describes what it means for the country to be part of the Alliance of Champions for Food Systems Transformation (ACF) and shares promising updates about the country’s climate ambitions - "We are formulating what we call NDCs 3.0 and the Alliance plays a crucial role to our NDCs. In Cambodia, in the agricultural sector, we are set to reduce +9% of emissions and that can be achieved by good agricultural practices. That is very crucial and will be included in our new NDCs” Learn how countries are driving #ActionOnFood, watch event live here and stay tuned for more stories on progress: https://lnkd.in/esDjDjbY #Cambodia #ClimateAction #FoodSystems #FoodForwardNDCs Sophalleth Eang CGIAR Food Tank WRI Food Greenhouse Communications
