Another great Specifi event in the books and it seems that, no matter the location, environmental concerns are foremost in everyone's minds. There's a long way to go for the industry, including ourselves at Furnitubes International Ltd, to be truly carbon neutral or positive. But, we're working hard to get there as soon as we can. We use recycled steel, Endura Ash (our UK-grown thermally modified timber alternative to imported Iroko), reclaimed timber courtesy of Ashwells - Reclaimed Timber, and our Kent-based factory gets its power from renewable energy. We're making progress with flat-packing our products for minimum transport footprint and we're offsetting some of our timber consumption via a collaboration with Ecologi | B Corp™. But it's encouraging to know that we're not the only ones with these concerns in mind. The more our clients and partners demand and require progress in this area, the more hopeful we can be for the future. #sustainability #landscapearchitect #manufacturing

This week, Theo and I had the pleasure of attending another Specifi event - this time in London, where we had some great conversations about the evolving needs of the built environment. This time, a few key themes really stood out: ️♻️ Sustainable Materials Matter – More than ever, people want to know what materials we use and, crucially, which are the most sustainable. We talked about our commitment to responsible sourcing, from our Reclaimed Tropical Timber collaboration with Ashwells - Reclaimed Timber and our own UK-sourced Endura Thermally Modified Ash options to Recycled Steel and Low-Density Polyethylene. These materials not only reduce environmental impact but also offer durability and long-term value. 🏥  Seating for Healthcare & Care Homes – The need for thoughtful, comfortable outdoor seating in care settings is growing. Our Elements Range, with its flexible configurations, as well as RailRoad and AKRI Systems, provide practical and stylish solutions that promote well-being in these spaces. 🌿  Planters with Integrated Seating – We always have recurring questions around the best way to blend seating with greenery. The versatility of AKRI systems, Ferns, and UNIUN planters are our answer, which seamlessly combine planting and seating to provide public spaces with the right balance of convenience and nature. Totterdown Street is the local colour we could use more of in our lives, and we're beyond proud to have aided in its transformation. Formerly a long road with the sole function of parking and delivery drop-off points, it is now one of the most vibrant and pedestrian-friendly streets in the capital — and the esteemed judges behind the London Design Awards agree, as it has recently won a gold award for its reinvigoration. Our FERN planters, in orange, are right at home in Totterdown, accompanied by beautiful, brightly-coloured outdoor tables that provide a good place to sit and watch the world go by. South London, with its tangle of culture and inimitable heritage, has become a little bit brighter with this pedestrian-forward approach to rejuvenation - and we hope to see more projects along these lines in the future.
