Future of Work Conference! Last month I had the great opportunity and privilege to speak at the Future of Work conference at The JCB Academy. During my talk I highlighted some key trends in the workplace and how students can prepare their skillset for the world of work. It was incredible to meet so many enthusiastic and motivated students who will become the next generation of engineering and business leaders! For me personally, it was great to hear from the other speakers and learn about their career journeys and experiences. A huge thank you to Fiona Duffin (MCIM) and Adele Balzan (MCIM) for organising such an impactful event and letting me be apart of it!
After returning to the UK from Nigeria aged 15 and now working at Airbus while completing a Masters at the University of Bath with only 3 GCSEs, Immanuel Oyetunde shared his career journey at our Gloucestershire conference last month—helping young people discover the opportunities that the high-tech manufacturing sector holds, and how to get there. 🚀 “It doesn’t matter who you are, or where you’re from, your gender, your background, you can make it.” As the manufacturing landscape continues to evolve, many young people remain unaware of the diverse range of career options available today and the various routes of entry. By connecting parents, teachers and students with real-world insights from young role models and industry experts leading the way in their fields, the Future of Work provides a closer look at the range of careers available and offers a clear line of sight to real jobs in a sector playing such a pivotal role in our future. We are proud to share that last month, Ashley Hussey, G-TEM's Production Manager at Plant 4, was a speaker at the Future of Work conference. Ash shared the stage with representatives from Rolls-Royce, Airbus, and Renishaw, recounting his journey from G-TEM apprentice to management, inspiring young people to start rewarding careers in engineering. Thank you to Future of Work for organising this impactful event and to our fellow speakers. Together, we have the power to motivate and inspire the next generation of engineers.
Engaging panel discussions, insightful short-talk sessions and lively networking opportunities – all packed into the third event in our October series! Bringing together young role models, engineers, educators and local employers, the conference (21 Oct) introduced students, parents and teachers to the array of promising career opportunities and pathways available in high-tech manufacturing, engineering and design. Inspiring presentations and insights came from Rolls-Royce, Babcock International Group, CFMS, Renishaw, G-TEM and Airbus. From sharing career journeys to exploring what the future of work might look like for young people—thank you to our incredible speakers and participants: Marc Saunders, Peter Passaro, Josh Mitchell, Alexia Williams, Tom Marsh, Ashley Hussey, Simon VARNEY, Immanuel Oyetunde, Zoe Scott, Noura I., Holly Stokes, Alex Ballisat and Ben Farmer. Huge thanks to our hosts Renishaw. Throughout October, we’ve been joined by a wealth of young manufacturing talent and industry experts who have navigated varied and inspiring journeys into work. Insights from apprentices past and present have played an important part in bringing students, parents and educators closer to the world of high-tech manufacturing, exploring the industry’s career pathways, and the opportunities that exist. Among the panellists giving first-hand advice to young people and their teachers at The JCB Academy last month were Stella Scott, a business degree apprentice and Freya Bexon, a non-destructive evaluation engineer. 🗣️ After the event, we caught up with attendee Rebecca Page from the St Margaret Ward Catholic Academy: “The more information that we can get out there about apprenticeships in particular, the better. Parents don’t tend to know about the apprenticeship route, they’re a bit cautious. As educators, it’s not something we’re massively aware of either.” “Events like this, talking to the parents, to the students first hand, are invaluable.” The ERA Foundation Will Stirling The Design & Technology Association Make UK Matt Chilton #Apprenticeships #Manufacturing #STEM #EarlyCareers
💥 Breaking stereotypes 🛠️ Challenging industry misconceptions 👩🎓 Moving the dial on gender diversity Hosted at Renishaw, our Gloucestershire conference featured the ever-inspiring Alexia Williams—exploring routes into the industry, changing perceptions among young people, and helping women and girls imagine what a career in high-tech manufacturing could look like for them. “I was the only woman that came into my scheme six years ago and I’m seeing the increase in the number of girls that are getting interested in engineering, but it’s still not enough, and I want to get out there and show that engineering is such a diverse environment that you can work in.“ 🤩 We promise this is three minutes of pure career inspiration worth watching! Parents, teachers, schools and future talent supporters, please use this, show this, share this, and help connect many more young people with the world of high-tech manufacturing, engineering and design. “I saw some statistics recently about primary school children and that as early as Year 3 they’re realising what a stereotype is and what an engineer looks like, what a nurse looks like and what a firefighter looks like. So we need to tackle this from a really young age.” “There’s so much more we can do, breaking that stereotype of what engineering is and that a woman can be an engineer too.” 🔗 For further information about the Future of Work campaign, head to the website: https://lnkd.in/ebtMNSM2 Will Stirling, The ERA Foundation, The Design & Technology Association, Make UK, Matt Chilton, Rolls-Royce #WomenInSTEM #WomenInManufacturing #STEMCareers #GirlsInSTEM #WomenInEngineering

Apprentices, young engineers and industry leaders came together for an inspiring careers showcase at The JCB Academy (23 Oct)—giving students, parents and teachers a close look at the world of high-tech manufacturing and how diverse and rewarding these careers can be. 📣 “If you read what’s out there in the general press, you might think that manufacturing, engineering, advanced technology is happening somewhere else, it’s not, it’s happening here, not in Silicon Valley, not in China, not in Europe, it’s right here on your doorstep. Fuelled by young people, and yes, by organisations like JCB, but also by much smaller organisations and much bigger organisations–and you’re going to hear some of that today.” The final event in our October series, opened by Max Jeffery, JCB’s Group HR Director, featured a wealth of talent from Rolls-Royce, Lucideon, KMF, JCB, Bentley Motors, Invibio, Shawpak and the MTC. The panel of speakers discussed skills, qualifications and routes into the industry, the benefits of a career in high-tech manufacturing, the impact of technology on the jobs of tomorrow and how young people can prepare for these exciting roles. From inspiring career panels to impactful short-talk sessions—thank you to our speakers for sharing your stories and invaluable advice: Max Jeffery, Nandini Chakravorti, Freya Bexon, Victoria Warren, Ethan Ellis, Connor Ayre, Ella Pilsworth - Straw, Ewan Spooner, Stella Scott, Holly Broadhurst, Martin Tideswell, Tim Hogan and Ali Amin.
