Gamification and Cultural Translation with Toby Beresford Why every gamification designer needs to learn to be a cultural translator. Toby Beresford, author of Infinite Gamification book and framework, challenges us to think deeply about the culture of our players when designing gamification programs. He will then provide a sneak preview of the new 2025 Digital Nations taxonomy that will help us tailor our offerings to specifically digital cultures and tribes. Toby is Director of Digital Strategy for Bible Society. His mission is to increase Bible engagement within digital culture. As a gamification specialist he has presented around the world working for many top tier organisations including IBM, PwC and the United Nations. His book "Infinite Gamification: how to motivate your team until the end of time" has been translated into Turkish, Arabic and Korean. Toby is married to Amber, who is a vicar, and they live in rural Hampshire with their three children.

It was a pleasure to speak at Gamification Europe last week🎲 The theme for this year's conference was ‘PROJECTS & PLAYERS’. So a personal highlight for me was to share the stage with Angus Hills, a ‘PLAYER’ from our UN SDG Social Entrepreneurship Experience workshop back in 2019. Angus shared how participating in this workshop inspired him to develop an entrepreneurial ‘PROJECT’ that supports women waste-pickers in India (the case study the workshop was based on). This year-long process then inspired Angus’s ongoing journey in entrepreneurship and social impact. I truly believe that learning that utilities gamified role-play simulations are a powerful way to inspire positive action - ↗️This is because it takes the learning beyond the content; 🌏by bringing the real world into the classroom; ❤️️evoking real emotions in participants; 🧠to build their emotional intelligence like empathy; 🤲which connects participants head, heart and hands; 🚀inspiring action beyond the classroom … not to mention it makes it super fun and engaging! I also learnt many new insights about gamification from the other incredible speakers: Andrzej Marczewski Igoris Ryklys Chantal van Kempen Samuel Liberty Eva Grillova Luis Alberto Del Castillo Thank you very much to Pete Baikins for having me and for bringing this community together🙌

Brain food is brilliant. Taking time out of the business – filling the hopper of the mind with fresh stimulus to work ON rather than IN the business – can be utterly transformational. Last week, I had an amazing day split between two great events. I’ll report on Ipsos UK’s Review of the Year later in the week. But I’ll focus here on fun and games. Fun and games in the world of work, designed to change behaviour. The first event was the Gamification Europe conference held at my Royal Society Of Arts. The gamification community is fun, playful, and deeply strategic. It’s also very welcoming. Convened and deftly chaired by the twinkly and resourceful Pete Baikins – whom I’d first met in Sussex at Brighton Chamber Summits – the conference provided such a wide and diverse range of stimuli it left me fizzing with energy. From public health to UN Sustainable Development Goals, from gamifying banking in Lithuania in the era of open finance to establishing new habits for the long term. I’m currently working on an academic paper on a hugely successful gamification project developed with Novartis this year, so there were lots of very valuable learnings we can incorporate there – will share them with you in the next draft Camille Wilhelmi. But beyond that, the conference inspired me to bring my inner behavioural scientist to work with me more often, showcasing the impact that the combination of information, motivation, and behavioural skills can have in truly effecting behaviour change. And if the rim of the cup can be sugared by fun and games – so much the better.
