Who is a Black figure that inspires you? A Black figure who has personally inspired me, and continues to do so, is Kanya King CBE , the founder of the MOBO Awards. On the surface, she’s the force behind one of the world’s most respected platforms for Black music and culture, but for me, it’s much more personal. Back in 2010, Kanya gave me my first break—a chance to intern at MOBO, where I helped writing press releases, blogs, and even got the opportunity to present on the red carpet. It was an experience that shaped my career, and to this day, I look back with immense gratitude because Kanya literally opened doors for me that I didn’t even know existed at the time. What’s incredible about Kanya is how she’s never stopped pushing boundaries. Her own journey—from growing up in a crowded council flat in Kilburn to founding the MOBOs with just six weeks to pull together the first-ever awards show—speaks volumes about her resilience and vision. She’s not just a leader; she’s a pioneer. And today, with her new initiative, MOBOLISE she’s continuing that legacy by helping to increase diversity in tech and creative industries, ensuring Black talent gets the opportunities they deserve. For me, Kanya isn’t just an inspiration; she’s someone who directly impacted my life and career. Watching her continue to create change for underrepresented communities reminds me why the work I’m doing today matters. Without her, I wouldn’t be where I am, and for that, I’m forever grateful. #BlackHistoryMonth #LinkedInNewsUK
