In view of the urgent humanitarian health crisis in #Ukraine, our The Global Vector Hub team together with Arctech Innovation have created a situation report on #vectorborne disease risks in Ukraine and surrounding countries. Key points: There is a risk of nuisance biting by #ticks and #mosquitoes in the coming months; There is a moderate risk of #Lyme borreliosis (LB) and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE); There is a very small risk of West Nile virus (WNV); There is a negligible risk of other vector-borne diseases (VBDs), such as malaria or Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF). Overall, the risk of VBDs is considered low; specific risk profiles depend on environmental conditions and living conditions of affected people. Avoid insect and tick bites. Specific guidance on preventative measures against tick and insect bites is given in the report. “Every morning, it's the same thing: she tells me ‘It hurts, Mommy’. Every day, she cries for thirty minutes and struggles to walk after receiving the treatment.” This is what the mother of 8 year old Stacey in Amudat, Uganda, told reporters from Radio France Internationale (RFI), highlighting the challenges of the current painful and difficult treatment regimen for the deadly neglected disease kala azar. RFI’s two-part feature reports from the border between Uganda and Kenya, where kala azar is endemic and where half of those affected by this devastating disease are children under 15. DNDi has conducted clinical trials at hospitals on both sides of the border in Kacheliba (Kenya) and Amudat (Uganda) to develop shorter, safer, and more effective treatments. We are currently working towards a fully oral, child-friendly medicine. The risk of mosquito-borne pathogen emergence from Amazon rainforest is influenced by neighboring forest edge habitat. Extremely proud of our field team who worked in difficult conditions during the pandemic to obtain these data. Also grateful for the support received from Fundação de Medicina Tropical Doutor Heitor Vieira Dourado and The University of Texas Medical Branch https://lnkd.in/dq3iJH24

A high fever, headache, vomiting and rash: these are some of the most common symptoms of dengue. In rare and severe cases, it can also cause death. While there are interventions to prevent dengue, like vaccines and bed nets, there is no specific treatment for the disease. What’s more, existing products often fail to meet the needs of those most at risk of dengue. We want to help change that. That’s why we fund research and initiatives to understand how dengue emerges and spreads, and to speed up the discovery and development of solutions to help.
