Greater Manchester Police was established in 1974 and is now one of the largest police forces in the UK and is responsible for keeping its diverse population of almost 3 million safe, spread over more than 1,200 sq. km. A new retail crime team utilising our student cohorts has been set up in Manchester city centre. A group of 40 student officers are based at the Arndale Shopping Centre. As a dedicated team, it has provided visible reassurance to businesses and increased the response rate to retail crime incidents. In September 2024, three of our officers from the Tactical Aid Unit were given the Bravery Award at the Chief Constable’s Awards. In October 2023, PCs Colin Harrison, Joseph Dearnaley, and Nicholas Leach risked their lives to rescue a woman from freezing waters at Salford Quays. Their quick thinking and selfless actions saved her life.
