About us

The Green Grids Initiative (GGI) brings together leading actors to accelerate the deployment of the essential infrastructure needed for a world powered by renewable energy. Expanded and modernised electricity networks are crucial to enhancing energy security, promoting sustainable development, and preventing a climate breakdown. The world in 2050 will need to realise massively expanded renewable energy generation capacity in energy-rich locations, connected by continental grids, as well as smart grids connecting millions of solar panels and charging points for electric vehicles, and micro-grids for rural communities and to ensure resilience during extreme weather. Since its launch at COP26 in Glasgow, in partnership with India’s One Sun One World One Grid (OSOWOG) vision, the GGI has established an ‘Ecosystem’ of partners from across government, finance, regulation, academia and the private sector, to provide a conduit for investment and assistance, and drive forward a global work programme. Collaboration is driven through regional and thematic working groups (including Africa; Asia & Pacific; Finance), which aim to help create a “project pipeline” of green grids projects to move from concept to completion at unprecedented speed. More information on current projects and core partners can be found at www.greengridsinitiative.net.  The GGI is also a leading initiative under the Breakthrough Agenda. Supported by a Secretariat, the GGI-OSOWOG is co-chaired by the governments of India and the UK and overseen by a Steering Group including Australia, France, Oman and the US.
