Green Marine (UK) Ltd is scaling up its Environmental Monitoring offering for Offshore Wind to deliver ‘full-scope’ projects following a surge in contracts with the Scottish Government's Marine Directorate. A series of contract over the last 18-months have largely involved the collection of PAM (Passive Acoustic Monitoring) devices, with operations lasting up to 20-days retrieving circa 40 devices over distances approaching 250 nautical miles. PAM offer a vital tool for offshore wind developers and government stakeholders to protect marine ecosystems and comply with environmental regulations. The Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) has guidelines for using PAM to reduce the risk of injury to marine mammals from offshore activities. These guidelines are adopted as part of the consenting regime within the United Kingdom Continental Shelf (UKCS). Green Marine UK Operations & Technology Director Myles Metson said: “The UK has the second-largest offshore wind market in the world with plans to triple capacity to 50GW by 2030. Much of this new development is on our doorstep, spanning areas where we have already performed extensive PAM operations. In response to market demand Green Marine UK is now expanding its Environmental Monitoring offering to deliver a full scope service. This includes the deployment and collection of devices right through to data processing involving our trusted partners. We are already seeing results, with new projects booked in for Q4 deploying scientific equipment in the Pentland Firth.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/dNC_NNRt #Offshore #OffshoreWind #GreenMarine #EnvironmentalMonitoring #MarineEngineering

Green Marine (UK) Ltd’s pioneering maritime initiative aiming to retrofit CTVs (Crew Transfer Vessels) with hydrogen, fuel cells and battery - to cut emissions while servicing offshore wind farms - has been granted Approval in Principle (AiP) by global classification society RINA. Phase 1 of Project Verdant, involving a preliminary design and feasibility study, has now been completed and deemed viable, opening the door to subsequent project phases seeking to execute design, engineering and sea trials. Led by Green Marine UK, the Innovate UK funded project includes maritime consultancy Waves Group Ltd and EMEC: European Marine Energy Centre. Global leader in hydrogen systems and marine fuel cell generators Energys Australia helped design and provide engineering and modelling. Meanwhile, EMS | Engineered Marine Systems supplied a design for the battery room, drawn from its extensive experience involving multiple hybrid CTVs. Project Verdant’s conceptual design incorporates hydrogen fuel cells connected to electric motors, working in conjunction with existing diesel-fuelled engines, which can be shut down to enable zero emission operation at slow speed while servicing offshore wind farms. Findings show the hybrid system could reduce the vessel’s CO2 emissions by up to 30% and NOx emissions by up to 40% – with CTVs commonly operating in loiter mode for long periods at a time. Green Marine UK’s Managing Director Jason Schofield said: “Following the review of a comprehensive package of design documentation and drawings, Project Verdant’s technical solution has been officially approved in principle by RINA,” he said. “With technical feedback supplied by RINA we now have all the necessary input to progress to the detailed design and implementation phase. Retrofitting CTVs in the manner prescribed by Project Verdant provides a means of significantly de-risking the implementation and testing of hydrogen fuel-cell vessels in the coastal environment. Once the concept has been proven up, there is potential to rapidly replicate. This would enable economies of scale to be leveraged and remove barriers to adoption." Scottish firms Ocean Kinetics Ltd and Green Marine (UK) Ltd) have formed a Joint Venture Partnership to decommission OpenHydro’s tidal energy platform in the Orkney Islands. Work is rapidly advancing to remove the steel superstructure installed in 2006 at EMEC’s Fall of Warness test site which OpenHydro used to streamline its tidal turbine technology development. The OpenHydro test rig consisted of two steel piles drilled and grouted into the seabed, with a steel superstructure attached to the piles to provide a working area. The turbine component was previously fixed to the piles using two steel collars, which allowed the unit to be raised and lowered into the tide using two 15 tonne hydraulic winches. The decommissioning work scope involves the entire removal of the steel superstructure, Diamond Wire Cutting of the piles, along with cable disconnection and termination. Green Marine Operations Manager Terry Norquay said: “While Green Marine and Ocean Kinetics offer a broad range of marine services, this particular job demonstrates the turnkey solution we offer specifically for subsea superstructure removal projects."
