Developing natural sustainable products through Plant Cell Culture Technology.
About us
At Green Bioactives, we are passionate about making a positive impact on the world by developing sustainable plant-based products using our innovative biomanufacturing platforms. Our proprietary Plant Cell Culture Technology has enabled us to revolutionise the way that plant derived ingredients are produced, using sustainable methods of cultivation without the need to destroy trees and habitats. This means we can produce ingredients in a natural and sustainable way that may otherwise be challenging to obtain at the required volume. We work with SMEs and multinational companies to help develop and manufacture natural plant-derived product ingredients for use in nutraceutical and cosmetic products. We offer co-development solutions where we can work in partnership with you to create the right solution for your business, and for your customers. We are a highly collaborative team of scientists, industry experts and entrepreneurs, all united by our mission to save the environment and revolutionise the industry of biotechnology. As we head into Winter, it felt only right that our December #PlantoftheMonth is the red-berried Holly (Ilex aquifolium) 🍃. Did you know this wonderful plant has shape-shifting properties? Holly will change its leaf shape from smooth to spiky in response to animal grazing or bad weather. This means on taller holly trees, you might notice the upper leaves are less spiky than the lower leaves. 🧑🔬 We use a very similar concept at Green Bioactives to elicit cells and get them to switch on genes that produce a desirable response, for example in our production of secondary metabolites. As always, we're inspired by the wonder of nature 🌱. #Holly #inspiredbynature #plantscience

From Sri Lankan welithalapa to Mexican conchas, last Tuesday we hosted an international bake sale in support of the amazing work of Stroke Association. A heartfelt thank you to everyone at Moredun Research Institute, Roslin Innovation Centre and Midlothian Science Zone who participated by donating or buying, and a special shoutout to the Green Bioactives team for the fantastic array of homemade bakes! 🧁 Together we raised an incredible £342.70. Thank you for helping us make a difference 💜 If you'd like to support this fantastic cause, you can still donate via this link: https://lnkd.in/eQDUjKZ3

🌿 Dictionary definitions: Plant Bioactives 🌿 Plant Bioactives are important secondary metabolites that elicit pharmacological (medicinal) effects or toxicological effects in humans and/or animals. 🔎 The Bioactives are the specific molecules in plants that deliver a benefit, for example glabridin in liquorice which is known to have many health benefits due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. 🌱 At Green Bioactives, we use plant cell culture to isolate these bioactives, select the highest performing cells and use them to produce product in bioreactors. #nutraceuticals #plantscience #dictionarydefinition

🌿 Dictionary definitions: Elicitation 🌿 Today we're testing your memory because this dictionary definition links to our previous definition, which was secondary metabolites. We'll help jog your memory a little! A plant produces secondary metabolites to protect itself. 🌱 So, how do secondary metabolites link to elicitation? Elicitation is the name for the process of getting a plant to produce, or increase the production of a secondary metabolite. This is done by adding a molecule or by another means, such as oxygen deprivation or cold exposure. For the scientists at Green Bioactives, elicitation is useful because it means when the time is right, we can control the plant to re-direct its energy away from growth and towards producing its high-value bioactive molecule. Not only that, we can tailor the elicitation procedure to the individual plant and molecule that we're interested in producing. Isn't science amazing? 🚀 #nutraceuticals #plantscience #dictionarydefinition #elicitation #sustainablescience
