About us

Greene King is a leading pub and brewing company with a proud heritage. We started as a small brewing business in 1799, based in the Suffolk market- town of Bury St Edmunds and have been brewing award-winning ales ever since. We brew some of the best-known and best-loved beers in the UK, including Greene King IPA, Old Speckled Hen and Abbot Ale. Over the last 200+ years we have continued to develop and expand significantly and have successfully acquired other brands and companies such as Old English Inns, Belhaven, Loch Fyne and most recently Spirit. Greene King now runs over 2,600 managed, tenanted, leased and franchised pubs, restaurants and hotels. You will find us in cities, towns and villages across England, Scotland and Wales. We operate three main business sectors: • Retail (Managed Pubs), including Hungry Horse, Farmhouse Inns, Chef & Brewer, Flaming Grill, Old English Inns, Belhaven and Local Pubs. • Pub Partners (Tenanted and Leased Pubs) • Brewing & Brands (Cask Ale & Premium Ale Brewing) We are focussed on delivering exceptional value, genuine service and consistent quality to all of our customers and this drives everything we do. Essentially, we want them to experience authentic hospitality and come away thinking that their time with us has been well spent.

Yesterday we were thrilled to host Mencap’s 2024 Employer Awards at the George, Southwark. The awards celebrated employers that are working with Mencap to provide opportunities for young people with special educational needs and disabilities to gain work experience and develop life skills in the world of work. At Greene King, we believe that everyone should be given a chance of a rewarding career, whatever their background. Our partnership with Mencap for our Supported Internship programme continues to go from strength to strength, and during our three-year partnership with Mencap, over 82% of young people with special educational needs and disabilities who have completed their work experience with us have progressed into paid work either with Greene King or another employer. We are so proud to have been presented with the National Employer Partner of the Year Award for our support of the Internship programme.

Following last week’s announcement of our two new prison kitchens, we had the pleasure of attending the launch of our latest academy at HMP Onley yesterday. It was a great opportunity to speak with candidates taking part in the programme, and to hear first-hand about how learning new skills in the kitchen is helping to build their confidence and prepare them for a career with us when they leave custody.

This week we launched our Brewing Ambitions report which highlights the various career development paths for people from all walks of life and from all backgrounds to help them build and fulfil their potential in hospitality. We held the event in the Houses of Parliament on Tuesday and were delighted to hear from Lord Timpson, Minister for Prisons, Probation and Reducing Reoffending, a trailblazer when it comes to recruiting prison leavers in his own business, giving his support to our Releasing Potential programme. Thank you to all who joined us: MPs, representatives from organisations who help Greene King deliver the career training and support, and industry groups. There were Greene King apprentices, supported interns and team members who have joined through the Releasing Potential programme on hand on share their own experiences of learning through the company’s skills initiatives. It showcased the important role pubs play in supporting people into work and enabling them to have rewarding careers in the hospitality industry. #GreeneKingforGood To find out more and to read the report click here 👉https://bit.ly/3YwBg5I

We are proud to announce that we’ve reached over £20 million for our long-term charity partner Macmillan Cancer Support! The money raised over the 12 years of our partnership has done amazing things to help Macmillan support people living with cancer and their loved ones. £20 million could: ·       Fund almost 150 Macmillan nurses for a whole year ·       Provide a vital £200 grant for 30,000 people with cancer ·       Support an entire team of specialist information nurses on the Macmillan Support Line phone service for a full year, helping them answer more than 60,000 calls and queries from people affected by cancer. None of this would be possible, without the fantastic fundraising efforts of our pub teams and team members, and the support and generosity of our brilliant customers, all coming together to support a cause that is close to the hearts of so many. A massive THANK YOU to all of you 💚

This Black History Month, we have partnered with curator and historian, Tony Fairweather, to bring the social history of the Windrush Generation to life in three of our pubs throughout October - The Shakespeare in Bristol, The Greene Man in Euston and the Malthouse in Birmingham. Tony will be hosting the “Windrush Front Room” exhibit, which recreates the iconic Caribbean front room, showcasing many recognisable artefacts from this era. Tony will also be sharing the stories of people from the African-Caribbean community, and the challenges and resilience they showed adapting to life in the UK. This is the first time the exhibition has been hosted in a pub and we’re inviting our local communities and team members to come together and find out more about a moment in our shared history. At this week’s Labour Party conference in Liverpool, we were pleased to host the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group and Campaign for Real Ale's joint reception at our nearby pub The Pump House for the second year running. Our CEO Nick Mackenzie MRICS gave a speech thanking attendees for showing support for the beer and pubs sector as well as highlighting the importance of the Government showing its support for this amazing industry at such a crucial time for all involved in it. Specifically around reforming business rates, not increasing alcohol duty and for the Government to remember the cost of doing business crisis that tens of thousands of pubs across the country are currently facing. Many thanks to CAMRA CEO Tom Stainer and the new chair of the Beer Group Tonia Antoniazzi MP for their support and for joining a true celebration of all that is great and good about the Great British beer and pub sector.

This National Inclusion Week, we caught up with the chairs from our four employee-led inclusion groups (ELIGs) to find out what National Inclusion Week and this year’s theme “Impact Matters” means to them. Our employee led inclusion groups – Greene Sky (our female community group), The Village Greene (Our LGBTQ+ community group), Unity (our Black, Asian and minority ethnic community group) and Ability (our disability inclusion group) play a vital role in supporting Greene King on our journey to Everyday Inclusion, helping raise awareness, promoting allyship and celebrating the communities that they represent. #NIW2024 #Inclusion #EverydayInclusion #ImpactMatters #GreeneKing

We have just announced our latest piece of innovation and collaboration as we continue our journey to be a more sustainable business. We have a number of trials underway to reduce our impact on the environment in our day-to-day pub operations. In our latest initiative with Solar Polar Limited we are testing out an industry first at one of our pubs – a solar pergola – a sustainable outdoor heating solution powered by the sun to keep customers warm when the temperature drops in our beer garden. This follows other announcements including a trial with Again to reuse more glass bottles served in 22 of our pubs. Meanwhile, our network of electric vehicle chargers in our pub car parks is growing, including a newly-installed super-fast hub by evyve Charging Network at Hobby Horse Farm near Leicester, to help our customers make more sustainable choices. Test and trials are so valuable to monitor the success of these innovations and build ever-more collaboration. Read more about these innovations here: https://lnkd.in/eE3Fc53V
