✍️ We’ve signed the UK’s business statement on the upcoming UN #GlobalPlasticsTreaty 🇺🇳 This week’s negotiations could turn the tide on #PlasticPollution, and we’ve joined the likes of WRAP and Ellen MacArthur Foundation to support a treaty that addresses the full lifecycle of #plastics 🤝 We’re calling for: 📊 A global framework to track plastic waste, improve recyclability, and drive reduction 🌿 Packaging standards to unlock sustainable design and support #EPR 💪 Mechanisms to measure and strengthen treaty effectiveness Our 2023 data showed 26% of material sent to landfills was recyclable plastic. Waste is back on the global climate agenda as the final round of the United Nations’s #GlobalPlasticsTreaty negotiations began this week, less than a week after #COP29 saw a landmark agreement on organic waste thanks in part to the inspiring work of WRAP! Now, more than 30 countries have endorsed the Cop29 declaration on reducing methane from organic waste 🌿 Organic waste is the world’s third-largest source of #methane emissions. If #plastic were a country, it would be the 5th emitter of #greenhouse gases 🏭 Could the link to emissions mean we see similar progress at this week’s negotiations? 🤔 Despite setbacks at recent talks, it’s becoming harder for world leaders to ignore waste’s impact on the planet 🌎 We’ll be watching closely throughout 👀 https://lnkd.in/gtYPkqRa

Waste data made headlines this week, with The Guardian reporting that an extra 5,000 tonnes of material gets sent to landfills and incinerators from November to March 📈 Data from DS Smith’s fibre recovery facility revealed that plastic contamination jumps 40% during periods of wet weather — a seasonal trend they’ve been able to prepare themselves for by gathering data over several years 📊 💡 The report makes it clear that the best time to start gathering waste data is… right now: 🔍 The more visibility recyclers have into historical composition trends, the easier it is to adjust processes before seasonal changes and consumption patterns impact contamination. 🏛 Insights like these don’t go unnoticed by regulators: environmental advocates like District Councils' Network's Andy Graham are pointing to waste data to argue for more robust recycling support at a national level ♻️ Read the full report below, and watch this space: we’ve been combing through the data collected by our 100+ global Analyzer units to share some seasonal insights of our own 👀 https://lnkd.in/ejimZs4Y
