  • “It’s been a dream of mine to go to university and become a master of my craft, and I’ve walked away with none of that.” Tia O’Donell, graduate, University of the Arts London, interviewed on Channel 5 News. Students and their universities have contracts. The students’ contractual obligation is to pay tuition fees. In return, universities are contractually required to provide specific services to students, including, we say, in person tuition and access to facilities. During the COVID-19 pandemic and strikes students received either online or, at times, no teaching, and a lack of access to facilities. Unlike other service providers, such as private schools, universities continued to charge full fees for their services. Many also boosted their profits by taking on significantly more students – Zoom calls and YouTube lectures do not have the same constraints on numbers as physical lecture theatres – and many took furlough money. Student Group Claim is seeking fair compensation from universities to reflect the difference in value between what the students paid for and what the universities delivered. Speaking on Channel 5 news, David Hamon, a postgraduate at University College London outlines how the limitations of lockdown affected his experience of university: “I was delivered an online degree, in my bedroom, with absolutely no interaction with students outside of the seminars.” Following her studies for a Masters degree in Forensic Science, Jowita Maniak highlights how the situation has impacted directly on her career prospects: “It’s still having an effect now, even a year later, I still haven’t found a job in Forensic Science or Crime Scene Investigation – I‘ve been told I don’t have the experience necessary. I have to sit in an interview and try to convince them that attending a crime scene over Zoom is the same as doing it in real life.” In contrast to the bumper profits made by a large number of universities in the affected periods, students were struggling with ever-increasing debts to pay for the courses they were saddled with. David Hamon continues:  “It’s an enormous amount of money and it’s an enormous burden, even if you do get the education that you paid for, but when most of that education is missing, that burden just feels so much heavier, and that’s not fair for an education that I didn’t receive.” It’s clear that a generation of students have cause to seek justice and compensation. As Tia O’Donell concludes: “I’ve come out of this degree with a very lacklustre degree. It’s not worth what I paid, it’s not of the same value, I don’t have the skills I was promised – so no, it’s not worth it.” Please do share this message with family, friends, and anyone who might be interested in the no win, no fee Student Group Claim. • Our latest survey shows that over 35% of UK employees have left a job due to unequal pay, with 42% having worked in environments where men are paid more than women. Despite progress, the gender pay gap remains a major issue, particularly for retail workers. At Harcus Parker, we're committed to fighting for fair pay for in-store staff at ASDA, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, and Tesco, who say they are often paid less than warehouse workers for equal work. Join us in our fight for pay equality. 🔗 Read more about the survey and how you can join the equal pay claim: https://bit.ly/wepmli #EqualPay #GenderPayGap #FairPay #RetailWorkers #EqualPayClaim #HarcusParker
