Here at HarperCollins UK, we publish around 1,500 books a year for readers of all ages and interests. Our bestsellers include Bernard Cornwell, Adele Parks, Jonathan Franzen, David Walliams, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Memoirs of British prime ministers. Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall trilogy. George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series. And legendary titles by legacy authors J.R.R. Tolkien, Agatha Christie and C.S. Lewis. We’re home to the most iconic bears, Paddington, Rupert and Winnie-the-Pooh, and Judith Kerr, Rob Biddulph and Michael Morpurgo, Mr Men & Little Miss, Thomas & Friends and Minecraft for our younger readers. As the only UK publisher to release audio versions of all our new fiction, narrative non-fiction and children’s books at the same time as their print publication, we publish 700 audio books every year. In a unique partnership with the Royal National Institute for the Blind, our complete catalogue is free for their members. Collins Learning, our education division is a pioneer in reference publishing. We develop market-leading dictionaries, atlases and bibles. And our state-of-the-art online learning platforms supplement our award-winning books for primary and secondary school students. Brothers James and John Harper founded J. and J. Harper in 1817. By 1825, their small printing shop had become the biggest publisher in New York City. As Harper & Row in 1987, it was acquired by News Corporation. In 1990, we became HarperCollins after acquiring William Collins & Sons, founded in Glasgow in 1819. We have offices in London, Honley, Manchester, Glasgow and Dublin. In London, we’re in The News Building with News UK companies. Keeping our historic connection to Glasgow, we’re also based in the Bishopbriggs district where each week, our distribution centre sends 1.3 million books around the world.

Join the #KidsConf roundtable! To delve into the solution to the reading crisis, we are joined by Caroline Cummins (The Publishers Association), Alison David (HarperCollins Publishers UK ), Sanjee de Silva (Sweet Cherry Publishing), Martin Galway (National Literacy Trust) and Debbie Hicks (The Reading Agency). 📚 Our panellists say that the solution must start with parents, that regularly reading aloud to children is vital in building reading habits and showing that reading is something fun that you can enjoy, and not just a skill to learn - do you agree? 📚 Stay tuned for more insights from our Children's Conference throughout the day 💡
Last week, HarperCollins UK attended the Labour Party Conference to engage with policymakers on the vital role of reading and language development in boosting educational attainment and wellbeing. Collins Education Publisher, Lee Newman, joined a panel including Rob Biddulph – HarperCollins children’s author & illustrator, Rachel Davis MBE – Co-Founder of Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, Geoff Barton – Chair of the Independent Commission on the Future of Oracy Education and Jim Knight – Former Education Minister. Key discussions centered around the impact of reading on closing the disadvantage gap. Lee emphasised that reading for pleasure is a major predictor of children's future academic success. Together, we continue to champion the role of literacy in shaping brighter futures for all children.
This week HQ announces the launch of Akan Books, its newest imprint led by author, broadcaster and diversity advocate June Sarpong OBE. The imprint name is inspired by Sarpong’s own heritage. Sarpong’s ancestors descended from the West African Ashanti people, Akan. Drawing on the oral storytelling traditions of African and Caribbean folklore, the imprint colophon depicts Anansi the spider, a master storyteller, who revelled in creative resistance and liberation: the perfect character to spin a great story. The imprint will be publishing three books between January and June 2025.

Did you know that for every new starter at any of our UK sites we plant a tree? We work with Trees for Life, a rewilding charity based in Scotland, committed to creating large-scale environmental change in the Scottish Highlands. We will be planting a tree alongside other native trees that will in time transform open Scottish hillsides into healthy young woodland helping to restore the Caledonian forest.
Did you know that London Bridge has its own secret little library? It is one of Team London Bridge's first public realm projects that transformed Gibbon’s Rent from being a dark alley into a splendid green oasis. This week, HarperCollins donated over 50 titles to fill up the little library from a variety of our divisions. These books will be used over the coming weeks to populate the little library.
