Last week, colleagues from our Middle East offices visited Senses Residential and Day Care for Special needs, a wonderful facility which supports orphaned and abandoned people of determination. We spent a half-day with the residents, beginning with a group athletic activity. Afterward, we split into small groups and visited the classrooms for one-on-one sessions to provide personalised support for the residents' learning and development. Congratulations to HKA expert Philip Ebbatson, whose testimony in the UK High Court assisted in a landmark victory for a client against a major rooftop developer. Philip was instructed by a legal team from Adam Benedict and Gatehouse Chambers. The case marks the first-ever High Court finding of a “relevant liability” under Section 130 of the Building Safety Act 2022 as a result of a “building safety risk”. This finding ensures that developers and their associated companies can now be held accountable for building safety, preventing them from avoiding liability by dissolving the subsidiaries/SPVs responsible. Congratulations to Elie Anthony and Michael Luong, who have won the Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport Joint Project Committee Awards for their work as part of the Handover and Completion Team. These awards recognise outstanding achievements towards delivering the Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport Project. Elie and Michael act as the interface between joint venture parties across four contracts. This award reflects their significant efforts in the past 18 months to implement systems, tools and processes that have enabled the JVs to collaborate and solve the challenges that arose as the project moved through delivery stages. Elie Anthony said, "We’re proud to be recognised for making a difference on the project and helping the joint ventures to work together to complete milestones on time. As we wrap up the year, we reflect on the recent Delos Dispute Resolution GAP Symposium 2024, themed Corruption & International Arbitration. HKA was delighted to join this prestigious event as a headline sponsor, with forensic experts and HKA Partners Juan Francisco Nasser, Claudia O'Brien, and Nick Panes holding a workshop on the investigation of corruption issues. The workshop looked at the life cycle of an investigation from an investigator's perspective while also engaging in the discussion about how lawyers and arbitrators should deal with evidence (or suspicions) of corruption. Held in Paris, this high-profile hybrid event brought together colleagues internationally who are involved or otherwise have an interest in the Delos Guide to Arbitration Places (GAP).
