WE SUPPORT THE INDIE BEER CAMPAIGN Hogs Back Brewery is very supportive of the new Indie Beer Campaign. If it is widely adopted by drinkers then it will breathe fresh life into the British beer market and ensure innovation, variety and economically sustainable local brewers. By way of background, before the famous 'Beer Orders' in the 1980s national brewers represented about four pints in five in the UK. The Beer Orders were intended to free up the market but long term it is clear the opposite has happened. 40 years on, and Global brewers/ owners represent over 9 pints in every ten sold in the UK. We believe that Global brewers are a very important part of the UK beer scene, bringing market efficiency and inward investment. But inevitably they take a world view and have incredible efficiencies of productionand global scale finance. Market power is now too concentrated in the hands of a very small number of businesses and generally smaller brewers are in effect foreclosed from many pub cos, and indeed supermarkets. But a lot of drinkers still want choice and the first step towards a more balanced beer market is to ensure drinkers know who they are supporting when they buy a pint. Beavertown and Camden are examples of beers that have pushed local beers off the bar and reduced choice and variety. You only have to look at the line up in most pub cos to see that, post pandemic, choice has been severely limited. So we would urge drinkers to support their local, independent brewers as well as enjoying the great range of world beers from Global brewers - that will ensure a vibrant, sustainable and distinctly British beer culture.
