As National Apprenticeship week comes to a close, I thought I'd put a little bit together about how I got here! It’s been 12 years since I joined HT as a Media Production Assistant on an apprenticeship. Entering as an apprentice gave me the opportunity to experience the role first hand. It was useful for deciding whether or not this was the career for me and helped me develop usable skills, rather than just the theoretical knowledge I had previously learned at college. In my first year at HT, I had some great opportunities to work on projects with a variety of clients across the UK. Travelling was very exciting, and something I was keen to do. I learnt a lot about how a business operates and the ins and outs of video production. 12 years have flown over. I’m no longer an 18-year-old, fresh faced and new to the world of work, I’m now a director Just as I have grown throughout the years, so has the company. I have been fortunate enough to be heavily involved in this growth, and to decide how the company moves forward. I'm thrilled that we’ve been able to take on a new apprentice this year, the first since I joined the company. Jack has only been with us for over a month, but has blown us away with the progress he has made so far and we can’t wait to see how he develops through his apprenticeship. It’s National Apprenticeship week! So as a fresh apprentice I’d love to tell you a little bit about my journey to getting here! Let's get started! Being fresh out of university, I found myself in quite a bit of a muddle! I had learned a thing or two, but I wasn’t doing a thing or two. In-fact, I was quite worried about where I could even go. And so, I turned towards an apprenticeship. Ever since I was little, I’ve always been keen towards the ideas of filming and video editing. Armed with little more than a camera and some dodgy app on my phone, I’d put together short movies of my action figures and toys; battling it out across my living room carpet to whatever stock music I could find. Yes, they may have been far from perfect and admittedly a little bit simple, but they were exceedingly fun to create and have taught me that perhaps a career in filming/editing isn’t such a bad idea.  After reaching out, I landed myself an apprenticeship for ‘Digital Content creation’ at HT and have since spent the past few weeks learning and familiarizing myself with editing software and all kinds of camera equipment.  So far, I’m making great progress and I’m already well beyond what both I and my mentors could have ever expected. Notably, a large part of this is due to how enjoyable I’m finding the work so far. By the time I’ve finished a project, I’ve entirely lost track of the time and it’s already time to pack up! Being able to do things creatively is so freeing in comparison to my previous years spent in higher education for, whilst there are still structures to follow, most of the project’s direction is entirely mine to create. The sky really is the limit! Overall, I’m extremely happy with how things have turned out and it just goes to show that your life doesn’t have to follow only one course.
