🎄 On the First Day of Christmas: Celebrating One Entrepreneurial Lead’s Journey! 🎄 This year, we’re shining a light on the inspiring journey of Toby Burgess, from The University of Sheffield, who joined the BBSRC ICURe Explore Programme in April 2024. Toby's work with Mitotype Precision Labs has been a shining example of entrepreneurial spirit. Through the ICURe Programme, Toby successfully took his research to market, engaging with stakeholders both online and in-person at #BioTrinity in London. Along the way, he created a professional landing page and explainer video, essential tools to showcase his vision and research. His dedication paid off when he completed his Options Roundabout in Edinburgh this June. Reflecting on his ICURe experience, Toby shared: 💬 "Being able to go out and actually talk to people that would be future customers was invaluable to us." Recommended to spinout, Toby has recently applied to the Innovate UK ICURe Exploit competition for up to £300,000 in funding - a testament to his hard work and potential! ICURe continues to empower local talent, transforming university research into ventures that benefit communities nationwide. 📍 From Bangor to Belfast, from Norwich to Liverpool, ICURe has: ✨ Unlocked the potential of local researchers ✨ Boosted regional innovation ecosystems ✨ Connected underrepresented groups with vital opportunities This year also saw 10 new universities participate in the Innovate UK ICURe Programme for the first time, expanding the reach of innovation and commercialisation support to more institutions than ever before. In Wales alone, engagement with the ICURe Programme increased by an incredible 170% over the past 18 months - a testament to the growing appetite for innovation across the UK. 🌟 Celebrating UniVentures and Supporting Welsh Innovation 🌟 As a proud supporting partner of the UniVentures Programme, Innovate UK ICURe is delighted to have played a role in accelerating innovation and entrepreneurship in Wales. Led by Sophie Webber, Innovation Director at Tramshed Tech TramshedTech, M-SParc and Wales Innovation Network , and funded by Barclays Eagle Labs, UniVentures showcased the incredible potential of research-driven startups and spin-outs from Welsh HEIs. UniVentures aligns closely with ICURe’s mission to foster entrepreneurial growth and support university-led ventures on their journey to real-world impact. Congratulations to Scott Dean, CEO of Graphene Trace for winning Best Pitch Award at the Conception X final! 🎉 Scott’s ICURe journey began in May 2023 when he joined the ICURe Explore Programme, delivered by Midlands Innovation. Through this initiative, Graphene Trace received up to £35,000 in funding, supporting salary costs, assumptions testing and customer discovery activities. Revolutionising Pressure Ulcer Prevention: Graphene Trace is on a mission to eradicate the prevalence of pressure ulcers by making preventative technology smarter and more accessible, utilising graphene technology & AI. With support from ICURe, the team successfully identified and refined the unique value propositions of their technology, strengthening its potential to transform healthcare. 𝐏𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝: Continuous & automated pressure monitoring protects the user on any seat, wherever they go 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞: Automated monitoring empowers users to take control of their own healthcare at home & improve their quality of care 𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬: Pressure Ulcers are the #1 cause of death in care homes (ONS, 2021) This technology enhances patient outcomes while contributing to a thriving health-focused economy. We’re delighted to announce that EcoTechX has been awarded the Northern Enterprise Award 2024 for Most Innovative Water Generation Technology and Sustainable Technology Excellence! 🏆 EcoTechX technologies offer innovative solutions for clean drinking water generation and sustainable cooling, leveraging solar energy and water-based operation. 🌍 This journey of excellence began with Dr. Muhammad Wakil Shahzad, CEng, MIMechE, FHEA participation in the ICURe Explore Programme (November 2022) through Midlands Innovation. During the programme, EcoTechX conducted in-depth market research, exploring supply chains, regulators, customers and competitors. Following the successful completion of ICURe Explore, the team was recommended to spin-out a company and secured up to £300,000 in funding to fuel their business growth and prepare for company formation. 🚀 It’s incredible to see EcoTechX thriving in the industry, leading the way in #sustainability and innovation.
