Henry Saunders is a 2nd year PhD student in our group and is also the Director of Instruct3D, a spin-out company specialising in machine instructions for metal 3D printers. The company aims to improve process reliability, decrease cost, and work towards part qualification. Over this past summer, Niels Schreiner, Sam Yeates and Ciaran Miles were pleased to offer a two-week placement via the Nuffield scheme. The placement saw five A-level students getting a crash course on alloy design, where they could design both an AlCu and AlZn alloy based on compositions they had agreed on via their own modelled phase diagrams. The students were also taught how to use and interpret SEM, XRD and hardness testing data to efficiently characterise their alloy. With the students having thoroughly enjoyed themselves and having written exceptional reports, we happily welcomed them back last week for the poster presentation on their placement. #AlloyDesign #MaterialsScience #STEMOutreach 

Wonderful to be presenting at the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT) R&D forum on Materials Data, AI and autonomous labs in Daejeon, Korea. Shout outs to the wide team behind our work on using LLMs for data extraction from scientific literature - Alan Thomas, Xianyuan Liu, Haiping Lu, Joshua Berry, Nicola Morley. Looking forward to a full day of discussions ahead.

Back in July Martin Tse and Ciaran Miles attended the Advanced Metallics System CDT Annual Conference held in Manchester, where they presented their work investigating creep behaviour of hydrogen reformer alloys and evaluation of AlSi coatings respectively. - "We also had the pleasure of hearing from the keynote speaker Prof. Susanne Norgren share Sandvik’s ICME approach in understanding tool/workpiece interaction in metal cutting. Joshua Berry and Katerina Christofidou have published a review paper called "Supervised Machine Learning For Multi-Principal Element Alloy Structural Design" in the journal Materials Science and Technology. The paper explores how supervised Machine Learning (ML) has advanced the design of Multi-Principal Element Alloys (MPEAs) in materials science. While ML shows promise, its impact is limited by data quality and availability. Our team had a fantastic experience attending Superalloys 2024 at Seven Springs Resort, PA last month! We are especially proud of Katerina Christofidou, who delivered an insightful talk on Eutectic superalloys for laser powder bed fusion (https://lnkd.in/datQCDdK) alongside chairing a session on alloy design and development. It was an incredible opportunity for the group to connect with experts from academia and industry, gaining fresh perspectives on alloy development, processing, and lifecycle improvements of superalloys. We're excited to apply these new insights to our ongoing projects and grateful for the support that made this experience possible.  Looking forward to continuing our work and collaborating with the wider superalloy community! 12 years ago, I had my first experience of an academic conference, attending Superalloys 2012 as a first year PhD student. Fast forward to 2024, on my fourth superalloys conference, and I was super pleased to take along members of our IDEA - Intelligent Design of Engineering Alloys group to #Superalloys2024 , whilst I also got the chance to present some of our work and meet some absolute legends of the field. It was fantastic catching up with colleagues from across the globe and already looking forward to Superalloys 2028! (also highlight at the "all greek" chairing panel with Paraskevas Kontis)
