𝐀 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲: 𝐏𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐚 Over 1,400 years ago, a small group of early Muslims sought refuge in Abyssinia (modern-day Ethiopia) from persecution in Mecca. Prophet Muhammad (PPBUH) encouraged them to migrate, praising the just king Negus (Ashama ibn Abjar) as a ruler under whom no one would be wronged. In his court, the Muslims found protection, justice, and a welcoming environment to practice their faith. Fast forward to today, Ethiopia is now embarking on a new chapter of fairness and inclusion; this time in its financial landscape. We at IFAAS (Islamic Finance Advisory & Assurance Services) are honoured to support this journey as the consulting partner of the Ethiopian Capital Market Authority for developing the 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐩. Sponsored by FSD Ethiopia, FSD Africa, and UNDP Ethiopia, this transformative project seeks to unlock new pathways for inclusive economic development in the emerging capital market of Ethiopia. During an onsite fact-finding mission last week, we delivered Islamic finance sensitisation workshops, convened thematic roundtables, and engaged with various stakeholders from the public sector, private sector, and community groups. These interactions revealed the immense potential of Islamic capital market products to advance financial inclusion and drive sustainable growth in the country. As Ethiopia embarks on this exciting journey, we are reminded of the timeless lessons from its history. Most importantly, how can we ensure that this roadmap not only drives economic progress, but also upholds the principles of fairness and equity that have defined the country’s legacy for centuries?
