Live Facial Recognition: The Need for Independent Testing and Clear Legislation 🔍 In light of the recent announcement from UK Policing Minister Diana Johnston, there’s a renewed focus on the role of live facial recognition (LFR) in law enforcement. The technology’s potential to enhance public safety is undeniable, but the debates at Westminster Hall also highlighted some serious concerns about privacy, bias, and the risk of misidentification. One crucial area that stood out is independent testing. With stakeholders raising issues about self-regulation by technology providers, it's clear that robust, impartial testing is essential to uphold accuracy and public trust. This technology’s application goes beyond sporting events and public transit hubs—it’s now being deployed on high streets, making unbiased testing a cornerstone for both credibility and safety. Our lab is committed to supporting transparent, rigorous testing for identity technology. We believe independent evaluation is a critical component in ensuring live facial recognition systems meet both accuracy and ethical standards, particularly as the UK grapples with a patchwork of regulations governing its use. 🌐 At Ingenium Biometric Laboratories, we're pushing forward with the next generation of identity and biometric technology testing through innovative methods that evaluate bias utilising the most up to date research methods from academic and international research institutions. Our team recently reviewed the research on Colorimetric Skin Tone (CST) scale from the US DHS Science and Technology Directorate. We looked at this interesting new measurement scale for assessing skin tones on images, particularly face images used for face biometric applications. This addresses a number of limitations of the previous methods of measuring skin tone such as the Fitzpatrick and Monk skin tone scales. With calibrated colorimetric measurements, CST potentially offers a higher sensitivity and accuracy, significantly reducing the perceptual biases that can arise from manual ratings in image datasets. This new approach may be crucial for creating more representative human image datasets that better reflect the full diversity of human phenotypes.
